Tarapoto ist eine Stadt des südamerikanischen Staates Peru am Fuße der Anden. Sie ist das wirtschaftliche Zentrum der Provinz San Martín, auch wenn Moyobamba die Hauptstadt der Provinz ist.

Mit 74.804 Einwohnern (Zensus 2017) ist Tarapoto die größte Stadt der peruanischen Region San Martín.^[1] Die Stadt liegt an der Straße Longitudinal de la Selva, die von der Pazifikküste über Moyobamba nach Yurimaguas ins Amazonasbecken führt. Zudem existiert ein Flughafen mit Verbindungen nach Lima und Iquitos.

Klima

Tarapoto liegt 250 bis 500 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel und hat ein tropisches Klima. Die Regenzeit ist von Dezember bis März. In dieser Zeit sind die Straßen um Tarapoto oft kaum befahrbar.
