Die XVI. Pazifikspiele fanden vom 7. Juli bis 20. Juli 2019 in Apia, Samoa statt. Nach 1983 und 2007 war Samoa zum dritten Mal Gastgeber der Pazifikspiele.[1] Die Spiele waren zunächst an Nukuʻalofa in Tonga vergeben worden, das im Mai 2017 vom Austragungsrecht zurücktrat.[2]

Die Spiele wurden in 26 Sportarten ausgetragen.[3][4]

Vergabe

Bis Mitte 2012 hatten sich Nukuʻalofa, Tonga sowie Papeete in Französisch-Polynesien (Tahiti) für die Austragung der Pazifikspiele 2019 beworben. Im Oktober 2012 erhielt Tonga den Zuschlag. Begründet wurde dieses vor allem damit, dass das Land nie zuvor Pazifikspiele ausgerichtet hat.[5] Am 15. Mai 2017 teilt der Premierminister Tongas mit, dass man das Austragungsrecht aufgrund finanzieller Gegebenheiten nicht wahrnehmen kann.[6][7]

Für eine erneute Vergabe bewarben sich neben Französisch-Polynesien Guam und Samoa.[8] Samoa erhielt schlussendlich den Zuschlag.
