Alan Wolff

Alan Wolff ist ein US-amerikanischer Diplomat. Er war von 2017 bis 2021 stellvertretender Generaldirektor der Welthandelsorganisation (WTO).
Leben
Wolff hat einen Juris Doctor der Columbia University und einen A.B. Abschluss des Harvard College.[1]
Er arbeitete beim US-Finanzministerium als Anwalt für den Beirat für Internationale Geld- und Finanzpolitik. Dabei war er auch in die Arbeit des OECD-Entwicklungskomitee und in die Formulierung der Articles of Agreement of the African Development Fund eingebunden. Später wurde er Direktor des Büros für multilaterale Handelsverhandlungen (Office of Multilateral Trade Negotiations) im Finanzministerium.[1]
Er wechselte dann in das Büro des Handelsbeauftragten der Vereinigten Staaten und wurde dort Stellvertretender Sonderrepräsentant für Handelsverhandlungen im Rang eines Botschafters von 1977 bis 1979[2] in der Regierung von Jimmy Carter. In der Regierung von Gerald Ford war er Rechtsberater. Er war Leiter der US-amerikanischen Delegation in der Tokio-Runde und später stellvertretender Handelsbeauftragter.[1]
Seit 2017 war er Vorsitzender des National Foreign Trade Council. Auch war er Vorsitzender des Vorstandes des Institute for Trade and Commercial Diplomacy.[1]
Am 1. Oktober 2017 wurde er von Generaldirektor Robert Azevedo zum stellvertretenden Generaldirektor der Welthandelsorganisation ernannt.[1] Dies blieb er bis 2021.[3] Nach dem Rücktritt Azevedos war er mit seinen Kollegen Karl Brauner, Yi Xiaonzhun und Yonov Frederick Agah dafür verantwortlich, bis zur Wahl eines neuen Generaldirektoren die Amtsgeschäfte zu übernehmen.[4]
Wolff ist Mitglied des Beirats des Peterson Institute for International Economics, ein National Associate der National Academies und Mitglied des Council on Foreign Relations. Er ist verheiratet und hat drei Kinder.[1]
