Newyddiadurwr a chyflwynydd teledu Seisnig oedd Richard Douglas James Baker OBE RD (15 Mehefin 1925 – 17 Tachwedd 2018).[1]

Bywyd ac addysg gynnar

Fe'i ganwyd yn Willesden, yn fab i Albert Baker a'i wraig Jane Isobel (ganed Baxter). Yn fab hynaf i blastrwr, fe'i haddysgwyd yn Ysgol Ramadeg Kilburn ac yn Peterhouse, Caergrawnt. Wedi graddio, aeth yn actor yn y Birmingham Repertory Theatre ac yn athro yn Ysgol Wilson's yn Camberwell, Llundain.[2]

Gwasanaeth milwrol

Roedd Baker yn gwasanaethu gyda Gwirfoddolwyr Wrth Gefn y Llyngesol Brenhinol yn ystod yr Ail Ryfel Byd. Roedd ar long glirio ffrwydrynnau a oedd yn gwarchod confoiau cyflenwi'r Arctig y Cynghreiriaid i'r Undeb Sofietaidd. Enillodd addurniad Cronfa Wrth Gefn y Llynges Frenhinol. Ym mis Mai 2015, dyfarnwyd Medal Ushakov iddo am ei wasanaeth yn y confoiau Arctig yn yr Ail Ryfel Byd.[3]

Gyrfa ddarlledu

Dechreuodd gweithio i'r BBC fel cyhoeddwr, gan gyflwyno newyddion teledu cyntaf y BBC a ddarlledwyd ar 5 Gorffennaf 1954, er mae John Snagge bu'n darllen y bwletin wedi cyflwyniad Barker.[4] Roedd ganddo gysylltiad agos â darlledu cerddoriaeth glasurol, a chyflwynodd lawer o raglenni cerddoriaeth ar y teledu a'r radio, gan gynnwys, am flynyddoedd lawer, y darllediad byw blynyddol o Noson Olaf y Proms. Roedd yn banelwr rheolaidd ar y sioe cwis cerddoriaeth glasurol Face the Music.[5]

Gwnaeth Baker ymddangosiadau cameo mewn tair pennod (30, 33 a 39) o Monty Python's Flying Circus[5] ac ar Sioe Nadolig Morecambe a Wise[6] ym 1977. Roedd hefyd yn lleisio Mary, Mungo a Midge (1969), cartŵn i blant a gynhyrchwyd ar gyfer y BBC, a Teddy Edward (1973), cyfres arall i blant eraill, yn ogystal â chyfansoddiad Prokofiev i blant Pedr a'r Blaidd. Priododd Margaret Celia Martin ar 2 Mehefin 1961.[8]. Bu iddynt dau fab Andrew, colofnydd chwaraeon i The Daily Telegraph a James, swyddog gweithredol yng nghwmni teledu Red Arrow Studios.
