Teulu o arglwyddi yn y Mers oedd y Lancastriaid, un o'r ddwy blaid yn Rhyfeloedd y Rhosynnau yng Nghymru a Lloegr ganol y 15g. Eu gelynion oedd yr Iorciaid. Roedd y rhan fwyaf o'r Cymry, fel Siasbar Tudur, yn cefnogi'r Lancastriaid a Chymru a Gogledd Lloegr oedd y ddau gadarnle pwysicaf yn eu hymdrech i gipio Coron Lloegr.

Yn 1267 y dechreuodd eu cysylltiad â Chymru, pan roddodd Harri III, brenin Lloegr arglwyddiaethau Mynwy a Theirtref (Y Castell Gwyn, Ynysgynwraidd a'r Grysmwnt) i'w fab Edmund, Iarll Lancaster (marw 1296). Trosglwyddwyd yr arglwyddiaeth, yn dilyn ei farwolaeth i'w fab Thomas a feddiannodd hefyd Arglwyddiaeth Dinbych trwy ei briodas ag Alice, merch ac aeres Henry de Lacy, Iarll Lincoln. Yn 1322 dienyddiwyd Thomas ond adfeddiannodd ei fab Teirtref a Mynwy, cyn iddo briodi Maud, aeres Patrick de Chaworth, a thrwy hyn daeth Henry yn arglwydd Cydweli, Is-Cennen ac Ogwr. Ei wyres a etifeddodd ei ystâd, gwraig John o Gawnt, dug Lancaster, mab Edward III, brenin Lloegr.[1]

Pan ddaeth eu mab Harri IV yn frenin yn 1399 trosglwyddwyd yr arglwyddiaethau i'r Goron. Yn ystod Rhyfeloedd y Rhosynnau roedd yr arglwyddiaethau Cymreig yn allweddol i ymgyrch y Lancastriaid, gan eu bod yn cysylltu tiroedd dug Efrog yn Iwerddon a chadarnleoedd yr Iorcwyr yn lloegr a De Cymru.
