Zbyněk Žába (19. června 1917 Doubravice u Dvora Králové nad Labem[1] – 15. srpna 1971 Praha) byl český egyptolog.

Život

Narodil se v rodině prozatímního správce školy Františka Žáby a jeho manželky Anny, rozené Šmídové.[1] Vystudoval gymnázium v Hradci Králové a poté Filozofickou fakultu Univerzity Karlovy, obor klasická filologie. Kvůli uzavření českých vysokých škol v roce 1939 dokončil svá studia až v roce 1949. Po druhé světové válce se věnoval egyptologii. Stal se docentem (1954) a profesorem (1959) egyptologie. Od roku 1960 byl ředitelem Českého egyptologického ústavu v Praze. [2]

Životu a dílu Zbyňka Žáby bylo věnováno speciální 18. číslo časopisu Pražské egyptologické studie, vydáno k stému výročí jeho narození. Všechny studie čísla jsou dostupné online.

Dílo

Byl žákem a také nástupcem Františka Lexy (s dalšími promluvil nad jeho rakví[3]). Významným způsobem se podílel na založení Československého egyptologického ústavu a na jeho prvních výzkumech v Núbii v rámci záchranné akce UNESCO před zprovozněním Asuánské přehrady. Vedl výzkum v Ptahšepsesově mastabě v Abúsíru. Za významné je dodnes považováno jeho francouzské vydání Ptahhotepova naučení a anglické vydání skalních nápisů z Núbie.
