Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL, francouzsky Ligue professionnelle de hockey féminin) je severoamerická profesionální liga ženského ledního hokeje založená v roce 2023. Ligy se v ročníku 2024/2025 účastní 6 klubů ze východu Severní Ameriky, tři kanadské a tři americké. Po základní části sezóny soutěží o Walter Cup, pojmenovaný po investoru Marku Walterovi, který ligu vlastní.[1]

Pozadí vzniku

Od roku 2015 fungovaly v Severní Americe dvě ligy, Premier Hockey Federation (dříve National Women's Hockey League) a Canadian Women's Hockey League a uvažovalo se o jejich sloučení, než v roce 2019 CWHL zanikla.[2] Řada nejlepších hokejistek, včetně většiny kanadských a amerických reprezentantek, které sdružuje hráčská asociace Professional Women’s Hockey Players’ Association (PWHPA) se rozhodla NWHL neúčastnit a požadovala stabilní profesionální ligu.[3] PWHPA neorganizovala vlastní ligu, pouze pořádala turnaje a exhibiční zápasy. PHF a PWHPA spolu dlouhodobě jednaly o budoucnosti ženského hokeje v Severní Americe.[4] Zlom nastal po sezóně 2022/2023, kdy byla PHF odkoupena skupinou podnikatele Marka Waltera, menšinového vlastníka Los Angeles Dodgers a Chelsea FC, spolupracujícího s PWHPA a bývalou profesionální tenistkou Billie Jean Kingovou.[5] PHF byla rozpuštěna, všechny hráčské smlouvy byly zrušeny a její aktiva byla použita jako základ nově vzniklé PWHL.[6] Ligu nemateriálně podporuje mužská NHL.[7] Počínaje zářím 2023 kluby mohly uzavřít smlouvy s volnými hráčkami, které nebyly vázané draftem, sestavy klubů se blíže určily během draftu 18. září 2023.[8] Její první ročník byl považován za úspěch pro ženský hokej.[9]

Systém

Liga probíhá systémem každý s každým, kvůli nízkému počtu týmů několikrát. První čtyři kluby po základní části postupují do semifinále playoff, které se, stejně jako finále, hraje na tři vítězné zápasy. V základní části používá následující bodový systém: 3 body za výhru v základní hrací době, 2 body za výhru v prodloužení a 1 bod za prohru v prodloužení.[10] Minimální plat pro hráčky činí 35 tisíc a maximální 80 tisíc amerických dolarů.[11] Po každé sezoně by měl probíhat vstupní draft. Zápasy jsou v Kanadě vysílány na CBC, TSN a Sportsnetu, ve Spojených státech na regionálních sportovních kanálech a mimo Kanadu na platformě YouTube.[12][9]

Kluby

První ročník PWHL odehrálo mezi lednem a květnem 2024 šest klubů,[13] jejichž města se částečně kryla se zaniklou PHF – Boston Fleet (bývalý Boston Pride), Minnesota Frost (Minnesota Whitecaps), Victoire de Montréal (Montreal Force), New York Sirens (Metropolitan Riveters), Ottawa Charge a Toronto Sceptres (Toronto Six).

Názvy klubů byly odhaleny v září 2024, do té doby fungovaly pod provizorními názvy ve formátu „PWHL Boston,“ „PWHL Minnesota“ a podobně.
