Nepravilna galaksija

Veliki Magelanov oblak

Postoje dva tipa nepravilnih (eng: Irregular) galaksija, sa oznakama Irr I i Irr II.[1]

Irr I su, na neki način, nastavak Hubbleove viljuške iza klase Sc, jer imaju veliki udio plina i dominaciju mladih zvijezda.[2] Nepravilne galaksije tipa I mogu sadržavati i neku vrstu "šipke" (kao barirane spiralne), te začetke spiralne strukture, kao što je slučaj kod Magelanovih oblaka. Takve se galaksije ponekad i nazivaju i Magelanske nepravilne. Primjer je Veliki Magelanov oblak.[2]

Irr II su one nepravilne galaksije koje nemaju strukturu zbog neke vrste smetnje. Primjer je M82 u Velikom Medvjedu koja proživljava period formiranja zvijezda.

Nepravilne galaksije najčešće sadrže brojna HII područje u kojima se formiraju nove zvijezde.[1]
