Don (ruski: Дон) jest jedna od najvećih i najvažnijih rijeka u Rusiji.[1] Izvire u gradu Novomoskovsk 60 kilometara jugoistočno od grada Tula, jugoistočno od Moskve. Rijeka teče u dužini od oko 1 950 kilometara do Azovskog mora, sjeverno od Crnog mora, što je čini petom najdužom rijekom u Evropi.

Od svog izvora Don prvo teče jugoistočno do Voronježa, a odatle nastavlja jugozapadno do svog ušća u Azovsko more. Najvažniji grad na rijeci je Rostov na Donu, a najveća pritoka je rijeka Severski Donjec.

Volga-Don kanal spaja Don sa drugom velikom ruskom rijekom Volgom.

Historija

Riječ Don možda potiče od avestanske riječi dānu- ("rijeka, potok").[2] Prema Kurganskoj hipotezi, regija kod rijeka Volga i Don bila je domovina Praindoevropljana oko 4.000 godina prije nove ere. Rijeka Don je funkcionisala kao plodna koljevka civilizacije gdje se neolitska kultura zemljoradnika na Bliskom istoku stopila sa kulturom lovaca-sakupljača sibirskih grupa, što je rezultiralo nomadskim stočarstvom Praindoevropljana.[3] Istočnoslavensko pleme Anti naseljavali su Donsku regiju i druga područja južne i srednje Rusije.[4][5] Područje oko Dona bilo je pod uticajem Bizantijskog Carstva, jer je rijeka bila važna za trgovce iz Bizantije.[6]

U antici, rijeku su neki starogrčki geografi smatrali granicom između Evrope i Azije.[7][8] U Knjizi jubileja spominje se kao dio granice, počevši od najistočnije tačke do ušća, između parcela Nuhovih sinova, Jafetovih na sjeveru i Šemovih na jugu.[9] U vrijeme starih Skita, bila je poznata na grčkom kao Tanaïs (Τάναϊς) i od tada je bila glavni trgovački put. Tanaïs se u drevnim grčkim izvorima pojavljuje i kao ime rijeke i grada na njoj, smještenog u maeotskim močvarama. Grci su također rijeku zvali i Iazartes (Ἰαζάρτης).[10] Plinije je dao skitsko ime Tanaïs kao Silys.[11]

Prema anonimnom grčkom izvoru, koji se historijski, ali ne sigurno, pripisuje Plutarhu, Don je bio dom legendarnih Amazonki iz grčke mitologije.[12]

Za područje oko ušća se spekuliše da je izvor Crne smrti sredinom 14. vijeka.[13]

Dok je donji Don bio dobro poznat antičkim geografima, njegov srednji i gornji tok nisu bili precizno mapirani prije postepenog osvajanja tog područja od strane Ruskog Carstva u 16. vijeku.

Donski kozaci, koji su naselili plodnu dolinu rijeke u 16. i 17. vijeku, dobili su ime po ovoj rijeci.[14]

Tvrđavu Donkov osnovali su knezovi Rjazanja krajem 14. vijeka. Tvrđava je stajala na lijevoj obali Dona, oko 34 kilometra od modernog grada Dankova, sve do 1568, kada su je razorili Krimski Tatari, ali je ubrzo obnovljena na boljem utvrđenom mjestu. Prikazan je kao Donko u Mercatorovom Atlasu (1596).[15] Donkov je ponovo izmješten 1618, gdje se pojavljuje kao Donkagorod na mapi Joana Blaeua iz 1645.[16]
