NGC 188 ye un cúmulu abiertu visible a menos de 5 graos del Polu norte celeste, na constelación de Cefeo. Calcúlase que se topa a unos 5.400 años lluz[2] de la Tierra.

A diferencia d'otros cúmulos abiertos que, pola interacción gravitatoria de nuesa galaxa acaben esvalixándose dempués d'unos pocos millones d'años, NGC 188 ta asitiáu lloñe del centru y a unos 1.800 al percima del planu galácticu. Ye unu de los cúmulos abiertos más antiguos. Calcúlase que la so edá ye d'unos 6. 400 ó 6.500 millones d'años, anque dellos autores aumentaron esta cifra hasta 10 ó 12.000 millones d'años.

Estrelles

Formar unes 120 estrelles.

Les pertenecientes a la secuencia principal son vieyes y relativamente fríes, de clase espectral F2 (esto ye, estrelles marielles).

Les xigantes son amarilloanaranjadas, de clase espectral G8, pero les diez más brillosos son xigantes marielles de clases espectrales que van dende G8 hasta K4, con magnitúes aparentes ente 12 y 14, y magnitúes absolutes de 0 a +2.

Ye circumpolar en casi tol hemisferiu boreal.

Puede identificase inclusive con unos prismáticos de 10x50, pero la resolución n'estrelles namái ye posible con telescopios de siquier 120 mm d'apertura. Los componentes menos lluminosos son de décima magnitú, pero la mayor parte son de la decimotercer d'equí p'arriba.

Al trate esti cúmulu tan próximu al Polu Norte Celeste, nun hai una dómina del añu más fayadiza qu'otres pa la so observación. El so altor sobre l'horizonte ye casi la mesma mientres tol añu: la variación ye namái d'unos 8 a 9 graos.
