Asarum canadense o jengibre xavaz, jengibre de Canadá, ye nativa de montes húmedos y ricos del este d'América del Norte. Topar nel este de les Grandes Planicies a les costes del Océanu Atlánticu, y dende el sureste de Canadá hasta aproximao la llinia de falla nel sureste d'Estaos Xuníos.

Descripción

Ceo na primavera desenvuelve flores distintives, arispies con forma de copa, color turráu o púrpura, que terminen en trés sépalos llargos como espigues. Les llongures rizomas dan nacencia a les fueyes persistentes reniformes (con forma de reñón). Les fueyes alcuéntrase en colonies o agrupaciones a midida que el rizoma espándese. El númberu cromosómico diploide ye 26.[1] Esta especie de "jengibre xavaz norteamericanu" ta protexida en Maine.[2]

Usos

Les llongures rizomas fueron utilizaos pa condimentar por cuenta de les sos propiedaes similares al jengibre verdaderu (Zingiber officinale). Ye consideráu aproximao de sabor 1/3 de fuerte que'l de Z. officinale pero nun ta emparentáu col jengibre verdaderu y nun tendría de ser utilizáu como'l so sustitutu porque contién concentraciones del canceríxenu acedu aristolóquico.[3]

Asarum canadense describióse por Carlos Linneo y espublizóse en Species Plantarum 1: 442. 1753.[4]

Etimoloxía

Asarum: nome xenéricu que provién de Rustieron, el nome griegu pal xéneru utilizáu por Dioscórides.[5]
