Frankly, I hope that there comes a time in which Wikipedia is the first place people will go to when they wish to learn about dialectal terms.
Y'see, I'm more active on Wiktionary, where my efforts have helped to fight off the systematic bias present for North American dialects there (my dialect of North American English, a variety of New England English, is very conservative [even so far as to not having adopted Noah Webster's respellings] and maintains a strong connection to the historical dialects of the British Isles [particularly Sussex dialect, the West Country dialects and Hiberno English. Which one was more influential depends upon which dialect of New England English is being spoken, which depends upon which part of New England the speaker is from]).
I am glad to see another fellow who is trying to balance the dialectal scale of a Wikimedia project.

Hello Johnsoniensis, there was a small problem in your assessment of this article - "B-class" for some projects can only be set, when all B-class criteria are checked and set as parameters in the project templates. I have left a note with more information on the article's talkpage, if you want to check this article again. I have not assessed the article myself, just handled the technical aspect. Best regards. B-class assessment
Apologies for bothering you again :), but doing a few more assessments I noticed, that you rated some articles as B, that had significant gaps in their referencing (e.g. Council of Frankfurt and Thomaskantor). Of course those B-criteria are not set in stone, considering every article on its own merits, but whole paragraphs, key statements and quotes usually should have some kind of referencing on B-level to verify their information. If an article has some weaknesses in one or more areas, it's usually better to leave it as C (for the moment) and mention the problem in a short edit summary. Thank you for your efforts to tag and assess new articles. Hello, Johnsoniensis. I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you started, Cornwall Domesday Book tenants-in-chief, for deletion because I don't think it meets our criteria for inclusion. If you don't want the article deleted:
remove the text that looks like this: {{proposed deletion/dated...}}
save the page
Also, be sure to explain why you think the article should be kept in your edit summary or on the article's talk page. If you don't do so, it may be deleted later anyway.
You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Places in Cornwall
Hi. I came across an edit you made to an article on a (maybe) place in Cornwall. If you have interest in improving the articles - and getting rid of the fakes, and non-notable places, I have a few suggestions: it would be great if somehow or another if there is a difference between a village and a hamlet, to make sure each article is properly in the right category; if not, perhaps a merger of the two categories into Category:Populated places in Cornwall, as is common elsewhere on Wikipedia. Also, it would be good to know in which civil parish these villages or hamlets are - most don't bother informing a reader. Also, any help finding references or coordinates would be appreciated. Happy editing. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 23:15, 17 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2015-02-17T23:15:00.000Z","author":"Carlossuarez46","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Carlossuarez46-2015-02-17T23:15:00.000Z-Places_in_Cornwall","replies":[]}}-->
Cornwall:-Yeah, it twasn't a good idea to stub them all, I took for granted they were all settlements as such but a lot appear to be farms. I'm all for coverage of tiny hamlets/farms which only appear on OS maps like Goldsland as I think it makes us more valuable as a resource, but only of course if sources can be found. I think a lot of the farms should probably be redirected to nearby villages. I've created Category:Farms in Cornwall anyway, might have missed some from the geography cat, if you could catch those I'd be grateful. Always open to working with you on any expansion of any Cornwall article, sure Gilderien and Rosiestep would also be keen. Just let me know what you want to work on! Regards♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 10:44, 2 December 2012 (UTC)
A large part of the articles for smaller places in Cornwall were made automatically by User:Dr Blofeld. I am not sure what he used as a method for compiling that list. (There are still many hamlets which can be found on 1:60 000 OS maps which were not included then.) When I was User:Felix Folio Secundus I improved many of them. I would not be in favour of deleting very many of the more insignificant Cornwall places articles as time spent looking for evidence could be better used on other work. I think the distinction between villages and hamlets is very important because of Cornwall's unusual pattern of settlement; the smallest hamlet would have only two or three houses and the largest villages several thousand (e.g. St Agnes). I am slowly going through Category:Cornwall geography stubs looking for deficiencies in articles but it is a long list. Explore Britain is a good source for civil parishes; I prefer to find the places on printed maps if possible and it is not so easy to pick up the civil parishes that way. I do not know why Treburley now has refimprove tag since every fact there is verifiable by the OS map.--Johnsoniensis (talk) 11:16, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2015-02-18T11:16:00.000Z","author":"Johnsoniensis","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Johnsoniensis-2015-02-18T11:16:00.000Z-Places_in_Cornwall","replies":["c-Carlossuarez46-2015-02-18T17:52:00.000Z-Johnsoniensis-2015-02-18T11:16:00.000Z","c-Johnsoniensis-2015-02-18T18:23:00.000Z-Johnsoniensis-2015-02-18T11:16:00.000Z"]}}-->
The map makes no distinction between village and hamlet. The claim that Treburley is the former rather than the latter cannot be ascertained from the map alone. I think that our notability guideline WP:GEOLAND keeps all hamlets and villages safe from deletion. Individual houses and farms, however, really need to have more than "it exists" or "it's on a map" as nearly every neighborhood, subdivision, housing estate, apartment block, McDonald's is on some map somewhere if you find the right scale and the tourist maps they hand out at resorts have every trinket shop on them, which does not mean they merit an article. We're a WP:GAZetteer, not a chamber of commerce directory or real estate guide. :-) Have you got a copy of "An Index to the Historical Place Names of Cornwall" a 2-volume book that seems to be rather comprehensive. Sold out on this side of the pond, it seems. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 17:52, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2015-02-18T17:52:00.000Z","author":"Carlossuarez46","type":"comment","level":3,"id":"c-Carlossuarez46-2015-02-18T17:52:00.000Z-Johnsoniensis-2015-02-18T11:16:00.000Z","replies":[]}}-->
"An Index to the Historical Place Names of Cornwall" sounds like a useful resource but I do not have a copy. The best way of getting all the hamlets and villages right would be if more people with local knowledge would edit Wikipedia but in practice they do not. In the last few years very little editing has been done on the smaller Cornish places. If Ordnance Survey get-a-map was consulted in every case it would be obvious which were hamlets and which villages but I won't be doing that. I do have this book Weatherhill, Craig (2009) A Concise Dictionary of Cornish Place-Names. Westport, Mayo: Evertype which includes etymological entries for Cornish towns and settlements (66 pages); it does not help with distinguishing villages and hamlets. The problem has been made worse by the automatic creation of "village" articles based on a list of Cornish place-names. I have altered village to something else when evidence has been found but time to do this is not unlimited.--Johnsoniensis (talk) 18:23, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2015-02-18T18:23:00.000Z","author":"Johnsoniensis","type":"comment","level":3,"id":"c-Johnsoniensis-2015-02-18T18:23:00.000Z-Johnsoniensis-2015-02-18T11:16:00.000Z","replies":["c-Carlossuarez46-2015-02-18T18:39:00.000Z-Johnsoniensis-2015-02-18T18:23:00.000Z"]}}-->
Cornwall has only recently been an interest of mine - I hope to visit there this coming Summer. Reading the guidebooks, there's lots to see & do but they are well short of real geographic references. <sigh> I have an etymological dictionary but again it's limited as you indicate. Cheers. What you say isn't true, the universities merged together in 2004 so it means the history and collections of the libraries merged together. The article on Brooks (Sir William Cunliffe Brooks, 1st Baronet) says he was resident for a time at Barlow Hall so old St Clement's would have been close. His loyalty to that church may have been connected to the fact that two of his daughters (born 1851 and 1852; both died aged one day) were buried in the churchyard. (A Short History of St. Clement's Church, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester, p. 6.) Perhaps there were differences in the style of worship at the two churches which affected their decisions.--Johnsoniensis (talk) 15:52, 18 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2015-05-18T15:52:00.000Z","author":"Johnsoniensis","type":"comment","level":2,"id":"c-Johnsoniensis-2015-05-18T15:52:00.000Z-212.121.210.45-2015-05-18T11:32:00.000Z","replies":[]}}-->
Thank you. I assumed, wrongly, that he lived at Whalley House, his father's residence at Whalley Range, Manchester, a short walk from St.Margaret's.
As for Mendel, its clear that he was able to play a squirarchical role at St. Clement's, which he presumably found appealling. 212.121.210.45 (talk) 13:07, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2015-05-19T13:07:00.000Z","author":"212.121.210.45","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-212.121.210.45-2015-05-19T13:07:00.000Z-St._Clement's_Church,_Chorlton","replies":[]}}-->

I am using Internet Explorer 8 and do not not have any other browsers installed at present. I have tried GoogleChrome and Mozilla Firefox in the past but found the appearance of the text on them comparatively poor. I am reluctant to upgrade IE as this is a very old computer. Expand German tag on Oti Mabuse article
Hi there, I created the Oti Mabuse article and used the German article de:Otlile Mabuse as the source. I don't think there is much more in the German article that can be used in the English article, so I'm suggesting the Expand German tag is removed. Contact the deleting administrator and ask them to restore the page. If they don't respond or don't resolve the issue to your satisfaction then file a request at Wikipedia:Deletion review asking for the page to be restored. Soft redirects are a perfectly legitimate use of a page so you have a very good case. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Bare Urls
Hi. I was wondering if you were aware of the existence of the WP:REFLINKS tool. In pretty much one click, we can use this tool to automatically expand/improve "bare urls". The script checks for any bare urls in an article, reads the subject or title of the page to which the url is linked - and fills in some suggested cite tags/refs. Tagging an entire page has some value - but I wonder if you might find it more satisfying to use a tool like this to address any problems you come across...
