A barnstar for you!

The Editor's Barnstar
Keep it up. Regards, CoconutPaste (talk) 23:27, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I see you removed my tag without discussing the issue or improving the article. Technically, this is a {{one source}}, relying mostly on a single source. I was trying to be charitable with a {{refimprove}}, instead.

Removing the tag does not change the fact that the article is not based on sufficient sources. I am not changing the article in any way, simply stating the obvious so that a casual reader will be aware that the article may not be fully researched or developed.

What the tag does do is encourage people who are a subject matter expert to improve the article by finding and adding new sources. That is the entire point and spirit of Wikipedia. If you don't have additional sources, wouldn't you welcome new people adding to the article? That's what the tag is doing.

Please do not remove the tag again without addressing the issue. To do otherwise is disruptive, and is known as edit-warring. The tag is a reflection of the current state of the article. It is not a reflection on you, personally. Please try to understand that, and understand that other people here are trying to help improve Wikipedia as a whole. I thank you for your understanding and co-operation. Hi-storian (talk) 00:05, 25 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks again for calming down and ending your editwar. I hope you take my comments to heart, and not try that again, ever. We're all trying to do the same thing, make Wikipedia a better place for EVERYONE. Please try to remember that. I hope to work constructively with you in the future. Enjoy the cookie! Hello. I had no plans to nominate it for GA. You can if you like, but I am pretty busy and may not be able to help out much. I do not have any books about Novello, so if you nominate it, you should be prepared to go to the library. -- Ssilvers (talk) 21:54, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Stub Obliteration

For this week I'm introducing a sort of game to blast away those stale old stubs with a prize at the end of it. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Wales/Awaken the Dragon/Stub Obliteration 2016. Expansion rules don't apply to any articles done through this, all you have to do is ensure every article you submit is minimum 1.5kb readable prose in total and adequately sourced and readable and remove the stub tag and update the project tag on the talk page. It could be that the article is 1.2kb readable prose and you simply add 0.3 kb prose and just quickly smarten up the sources and give a minor copyedit. The goal is reducing the number of stubs we have and making them more consistent, minimum start class entries. Read the top for the rules and more details and add your name to it in the style of the main entries page if you want to participate. It's open to contestants and anybody who is participating in the editathon independently. Potentially a lot of points can be earned from mass basic expansions with this!♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:16, 4 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Formatting

Hi, mentioned the Barry Railway to Seth. Placing a 100 bonus on that for GA status! Missing article incredibly. Tell me, do you have an issue with the sourcing in St Catharine's Church, Baglan. Deb seems happy with it, I had rather hoped she could format with the title and publisher separate. Shall I permit it? I don't want to put people off contributing, but don't think it's too difficult to start doing it.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:43, 4 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the Barn Star

Thanks very much for the Barn Star. :) Much appreciated. I'm trying to do some fixing on some of these sadly neglected articles ahead of the Paralympic Games in Rio. Please feel more than free to copy edit these edits because I keep picking up typos, and sometimes speed makes that worse. Also, any thoughts on organization, section headings? Please do act on them. I've done some but not completely happy with most of them other than not liking what was there. There are also flow issues because of organization. Some stuff could go in more than one place. And yeah, any content additions, more love from me. :D --LauraHale (talk) 15:31, 22 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. I've started a new initiative, the Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. It's a long term goal to bring about 10,000 article improvements to the UK and Ireland. Through two contests involving just six or seven weeks of editing so far we've produced over 1500 improvements. Long term if we have more people chipping it and adding articles they've edited independently as well from all areas of the UK then reaching that target is all possible. I think it would be an amazing achievement to see 10,000 articles improvements by editors chipping in. If you support this and think you might want to contribute towards this long term please sign up in the Contributors section. No obligations, just post work on anything you feel like whenever you want, though try to avoid basic stubs if possible as we're trying to reduce the overall stub count and improve general comprehension and quality. Thanks.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:09, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Rio

Hey Fruitmonkey. Yeah. I am in Rio. There are some difficulties getting copyright usable images. I know anything in the Paralympic venues, unless released by a Broadcasting Rights Holder, doesn't work copyright wise and should be deleted from Commons. I'm trying to get as many images as I possibly can that are copyright free when I can. They aren't necessarily great. I'm shoving them into the relevant categories when I can get them and trying to link them. I apologize for lack of quality as I feel a bit guilty but copyright restrictions are a pain in the ass. :( But yeah, hopefully I can get a few more. I've talked to some people to try to get them if they have availabiliy. --LauraHale (talk) 12:53, 8 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Angela Madsen), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Hi, at Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge we're striving to bring about 10,000 article improvements and creations for the UK and Ireland and inspire others to create more content. In order to achieve this we need diversity of content, in all parts of the UK and Ireland on all topics. Eventually a regional contest will be held for all parts of the British Isles, like they were for Wales and the Wedt Country. We currently have just over 1900 articles and need contributors! If you think you'd be interested in collaborating on this and helping reach the target quicker, please sign up and begin listing your entries there as soon as possible! Invite to the African Destubathon

Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most geography, wildlife and women articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! So it would be a good chance to win something for improving stubs on African Paralympians, particularly female ones, but also male. Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing a few expanded articles on African Paralympians, Olympians and committees etc, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. Thanks.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:47, 5 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, are you entering Kadiatou Konaté into the contest? New articles are acceptable for themain list, provided they're sourced and not stubs but won't count for the contest itself. Obviously the major focus is on existing article improvement though.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:24, 28 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Country at the Paralympic Games question

Hi FruitMonkey. I have a question I'd love your input on. I'm currently researching disability sport in Cameroon for some articles I am drafting in my user space. Cameroon did not participate in the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Summer Paralympics. There is some information about Cameroon's attempts to qualify and why they did not participate in these Games. (NPC suspension, money issues, etc. for non-participation. A few athletes were trying to qualify.) I was wondering if articles could be created about this, and what their names should be given that Cameroon did not actually participate. "Cameroon and the 2000 Summer Paralympics" as a title given the non-participation? And given the lack of participation but importance of why they missed out, how would that be worked into the infobox that generally goes on those articles? In any case, your input would be greatly appreciated by me. :) Thanks. --LauraHale (talk) 05:42, 7 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation from Wikipedia Asian Month 2016

Thanks for partipating Wikipedia Asian Month last year, and I hope you enjoy it. Last year, more than 7,000 articles contribute to Wikipedia in 43 languages in Wikipedia Asian Month, making us one of the largest event on Wikipedia. We will organize this event again in upcoming November, and would like to invite you join us again.

This year, we are lowering down the standards that you only need to create 4 (Four) articles to receive a postcard (new design), and articles only need to be more than 3,000 bytes and 300 words. We are also improving our postcard sending process, e.g. making the postcards right now, and collecting the address after the event ends without waiting other languges.

Wikipedians who create the most articles on each Wikipedia will be honored as "Wikipedia Asian Ambassadors". We will send you both digital copy, and a paper copy of the Ambassador certificate.

Thank you for considering! --AddisWang (talk)

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 06:10, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Although we have identical birth and death dates and places, I find it hard to believe that these two guys are the same person. There is no mention of Jenkins playing league in any books I have, and he was still representing London Welsh in 1911. Not only that but he was a committee member of Middlesex and played for the county in 1926 when he was 46. There is no way he would have been allowed to return to Union after playing league, and if he did return from pro-rugby it would be a major reference point in many books. FruitMonkey (talk) 13:13, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Going back in time more than 3½-years… I've now found that "my" John "Jack" T. Jenkins had a rugby union career with Llwynypia RFC prior to joining Warrington in 1906. It seems highly unlikely that "my" John "Jack" T. Jenkins and "your" John "Jack" Charles Jenkins would have the same date/place of birth, and the same date of death… I'm pretty convinced that births/deaths or "my" man have somehow assimilated "your" man… perhaps one day we might be able to sort this troublesome pair out :) Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year DynamoDegsy (talk) 14:23, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You or another contributor marked an upload of yours with an unknown author. Whilst the author may well be unknown, it's advised that uploader make a "reasonable effort" to determine if an author is genuinely unknown (as opposed to merely uncredited), and that as much information as possible is provided to determine if such efforts have been undertaken, and to assist other contributors that may be able to expand upon them.

It would be appreciated if you could add additional information to the image concerned, to assist with this.

If this is a "service" photo, which the license tag on it currently, then the most likely author would be whichever branch of the UK armed forces he served with? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 09:32, 24 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A gentle reminder

With respect to Wales, just accept a gentle reminder that it really should be WP:BRD not BRR... etc etc. And, no, this should not be taken as a warning, even though some might think one were justified; it really is just a gentle reminder to you. Nevertheless, yes, if one is convinced one is correct and what one is doing is clearly not combatting vandalism, but merely engaging with someone who has a different understanding of emphasis or of influence, it can be frustrating at times, but we are supposed to go directly to discussion (on the relevant talk page). Best wishes.  DDStretch  (talk) 23:58, 7 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Welsh nationality

OK, you are going to have to explain this one to me. How in any way is "Welsh" a nationality except in the most fevered imagination of a Welsh nationalist? There are no Welsh passports, and Wales has not been an independent state for centuries. You may as well call "Cornish" a nationality! --Legis (talk - contribs) 00:00, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. Legacypac (talk) 02:44, 26 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thankyou for your participation in the challenge series or/and contests. In November The Women in Red World Contest is being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. There will be over $4000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. If this would appeal to you and you think you'd be interested in contributing new articles on women during this month for your region or wherever please sign up in the participants section. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate and raise money to buy books about women for others to use, this is also fine. Thankyou, and if taking part, good luck!♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:04, 27 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Treorchy Male Choir

Hi Fruit Monkey I am a total newcomer to Wikipedia editing. I wonder if you can help please. During my spare time I promote Treorchy Male Choir and a number of other Welsh organisations / individuals. I;ve just uploaded a new image of the Choir to their Wikipedia page. But I wonder whether you can advise me on how to place it on the front page itself? I realize you have one of three choristers in Gellia. But would you kindly consider replacing it with the new image of the entire Choir? Not sure how on earth to do it! Thanks Dean Powell

Hi User:Llantrisant1346. I see that User:FruitMonkey has not been active here for a while, so I have taken the liberty of responding. Looking at Treorchy Male Choir, it seems you have just updated the link to the choir's website? Were you trying to also update the image at the top of the article? Thanks. Hi. This month The Women in Red World Contest is being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. There is over £3000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. Wikimedia UK is putting up £250 specifically for editors who produce the most quality new women bios for British women, with special consideration given to missing notable biographies from the Oxford Dictionary of Biography and Welsh Dictionary of Biography. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate independently this is also fine, but please add any articles created to the bottom of the main contest page even if not competing. Your participation in the contest and contributing articles on British women from your area or wherever would we much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi. We're into the last five days of the Women in Red World Contest. There's a new bonus prize of $200 worth of books of your choice to win for creating the most new women biographies between 0:00 on the 26th and 23:59 on 30th November. If you've been contributing to the contest, thank you for your support, we've produced over 2000 articles. If you haven't contributed yet, we would appreciate you taking the time to add entries to our articles achievements list by the end of the month. Thank you, and if participating, good luck with the finale!

Johnnie Morgan rugby article

Hi. I'm working through some of the easier fixes in Rugby Union project and saw the Johnnie Morgan article. Theres a bit about him working as a police officer in Campo Largo but the date is unclear so has been tagged. Looking back through the history it was the day you created the article and added more content. If you still have the book, would you be able to check the book and quickly fix the year? It was "Who's Who of Welsh International Rugby Players" by Jenkins, Pierce and Auty 1991. Page ref was 133. Thank you. Jkmaskell (talk) 21:18, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

November 1928: Welsh rugby internationals Dan Jones (left), P C T Arthur (centre) and P C T Hollingdale at Preston Park.

I'm not sure how Wiki-active you currently are, but this image entitled… November 1928: Welsh rugby internationals Dan Jones (left), P C T Arthur (centre) and P C T Hollingdale at Preston Park. (Photo by Hewerdine/London Express/Getty Images) is stored in Wikimedia, and crops from it are used on the articles for; David "Dai" Lewis Jones, Tom Arthur, and Thomas Hollingdale. I have three questions; 1. What kit are they wearing? (Neath? combined Aberavon and Neath XV? Glamorganshire? Wales?), 2. Where is Preston Park (Brighton? (unlikely), Preston, Lancashire? (unlikely)), and 3. I believe David Jones joined Wigan (RL) in February 1927, so the image is unlikely to be from 1928, so on what date was it taken, or alternatively, is this a different (or not even a) David Jones? Best regards. DynamoDegsy (talk) 16:51, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

place name capitals

FruitMonkey - I applaud all the work you've done getting Wales on WP, something I'm keen on too, though myself an incomer. I was tidying some Welsh entries and came upon Rhondda Fawr and Rhondda Fach and changed the translations so that 'big' and 'little' did not open with caps, my reasoning being that these themselves are not place-names but translations for those unfamiliar with Welsh words 'Fawr' and 'Fach'. You didn't agree. Sgwd yr Eira is another example where I would suggest 'Waterfall of Snow' would be wrong but 'falls of snow' would be correct as a simple translation of the name in common use. In my experience people don't use the expression, 'big Rhondda' when speaking in English (nor indeed 'large Rhondda' or great Rhondda') but drop the whole name 'Rhondda Fawr' into their speech. Moreover, increased use of translations as actual alternative names for localities can reduce the use of the native names, ultimately leading to their disappearance from common conversation, to the detriment of Welsh culture. thanks Geopersona (talk) 08:20, 10 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. Hi, I notice that you created Cerdd dafod several years ago, and I wondered if you are up for adding a section on Welsh poetry to Metre (poetry). Wales is noteworthy in having a long documented culture of strict metre poetry that continues to this day. I could have a go, but my knowledge of this topic is minimal. John Mantle

Hi FruitMonkey, it's been a while since we last "colluded". Via 'Rugby league historians' Facebook group, the sister of John Mantle (rugby) has told me that he didn't have a middle name (Although i have found that family memories are not as reliable as one might imagine). Its been John Thomas Mantle since the Wikipedia article was initiated by yourself back on 1 December 2008‎... the odd thing is I can't find the 1942 birth of John Mantle in Cardiff on the FreeBMD website, only in Bedwellty (1936 and 1941) or even further away (I think, my Welsh historical county knowledge is poor) in Radnorshire East (1938 and 1940), your thoughts? 🏉 DynamoDegsy (talk) 08:03, 24 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Freddie Welsh query

Hi there, I've been giving Freddie Welsh's article a polish to take your fine work up to its deserved GA status. Obviously, as the primary editor of the article, you're more than welcome to nominate it yourself. I'd be happy to co-nom with you and, after I've done a run through, I would add you as a co-nom either way.

I've a quick query on one matter, in the "early history and amateur career" section, the fifth paragraph begins with "His first job in New York City was as a bouncer" but the previous paragraph mentions him working in New York as a dish washer and a banner bearer. Did the bouncing come before these or is the timeline slightly askew? Thanks Kosack (talk) 10:19, 12 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I've nominated this for GA now as I think it'll probably get through a review with little problem. I've added you as a co-nominator so please feel free to participate. Kosack (talk) 09:23, 14 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
