The San Diego Padres are an American professional baseball team based in San Diego. The Padres compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) West Division. Henry Manuel Báez (born October 12, 2002) is a Dominican professional baseball pitcher for the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball (MLB).

On July 2, 2019, Báez signed with the San Diego Padres as an international free agent.[1] He did not play in a game in 2020 due to the cancellation of the minor league season because of the COVID-19 pandemic.[2] Báez made his professional debut in 2021 with the Dominican Summer League Padres, posting a 4.25 ERA with 37 strikeouts over 12 games (10 starts).[3]

Báez spent the 2022 season with the rookie–level Arizona Complex League Padres, making 9 appearances (7 starts) and logging a 1–4 record and 3.82 ERA with 41 strikeouts across 30+23 innings of work.[4] He split 2023 between the Single–A Lake Elsinore Storm and High–A Fort Wayne TinCaps. In 21 games (18 starts) for the two affiliates, Báez registered a combined 7–3 record and 3.84 ERA with 99 strikeouts across 98+13 innings pitched.[5]

Báez split the 2024 campaign between High–A Fort Wayne and the Double–A San Antonio Missions, compiling a 7–4 record and 2.99 ERA with 109 strikeouts across 129+13 innings pitched over 26 starts. He was subsequently named San Diego's minor league pitcher of the year.[6] Following the season, the Padres added Báez to their 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.[7]

Ryan Bergert

Ryan Michael Bergert (born March 8, 2000) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball (MLB).

Bergert attended GlenOak High School in Canton, Ohio, where he played baseball. As a senior in 2019, he went 4–2 with a 3.19 ERA and 66 strikeouts over 37 innings.[8] After graduating, he enrolled at West Virginia University where he played college baseball.

As a freshman at West Virginia in 2019, Bergert pitched to a 2–0 record and a 1.85 ERA over 34 innings.[9] As a sophomore in 2020, he posted a 2.92 ERA over 24+23 innings.[10] That summer, he played in the Northwoods League for the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders.[11] He did not play a game with West Virginia in 2021 after undergoing Tommy John surgery.[12] Bergert was then selected by the San Diego Padres in the sixth round of the 2021 Major League Baseball draft.[13]

Bergert signed and made his professional debut near the end of the 2021 season with the Arizona Complex League Padres, giving up no earned runs over 11 innings. He played the 2022 season with the Fort Wayne TinCaps, starting 24 games and going 4–10 with a 5.84 ERA and 129 strikeouts over 103+13 innings.[14] He returned to Fort Wayne to open the 2023 season.[15][16] He was promoted to the San Antonio Missions in mid-July.[17] Over 23 games (twenty starts), Bergert went 6–4 with a 2.73 ERA and 126 strikeouts over 105+23 innings.[18]

Bergert was assigned back to San Antonio to open the 2024 season.[19] In 23 starts for the Missions, he logged a 2–10 record and 4.78 ERA with 87 strikeouts across 98 innings of work. Following the season, the Padres added Bergert to their 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.[20]


Omar Cruz

Omar Alejandro Cruz (born January 26, 1999) is a Mexican professional baseball pitcher for the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball (MLB).

Cruz signed with the San Diego Padres as an international free agent in 2017.[21] He made his professional debut in 2018 with the Rookie-level Arizona League Padres and was promoted to the Tri-City Dust Devils of the Low–A Northwest League in July. Over 11 games (ten starts) with the two clubs, he pitched to a 1–1 record with a 1.91 ERA, striking out 59 batters over 42+13 innings.[22][23] He returned to Tri-City to begin the 2019 season before he was promoted to the Fort Wayne TinCaps of the Single–A Midwest League. Cruz compiled a combined 2–3 record and 2.73 ERA over 12 starts, striking out 76 over 56 innings.[24]

On January 19, 2021, Cruz (alongside David Bednar, Drake Fellows, Hudson Head, and Endy Rodríguez) was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in a three team deal that also sent Joe Musgrove to the Padres and Joey Lucchesi to the New York Mets.[25] To begin the 2021 season, he was assigned to the Greensboro Grasshoppers of the High-A East.[26] After seven starts in which he went 3–3 with a 3.45 ERA and 38 strikeouts over 28+23 innings, he was promoted to the Altoona Curve of the Double-A Northeast.[27] Over 14 starts with Altoona, he went 3–4 with a 3.44 ERA over 70+23 innings.[28] He returned to Altoona for the 2022 season.[29] Over 23 games (five starts), Cruz posted a 3–3 record with a 5.03 ERA and 69 strikeouts over 62+23 innings.[30]

On December 6, 2023, Cruz was selected by the San Diego Padres in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft.[31] He made 34 appearances split between the Double–A San Antonio Missions and Triple–A El Paso Chihuahuas, compiling a 6–2 record and 3.96 ERA with 118 strikeouts across 86+13 innings pitched. On November 19, 2024, the Padres added Cruz to their 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.[32]

Anthony Clay Dungan (born June 2, 1996) is an American professional baseball infielder in the San Diego Padres organization.

Dungan attended Yorktown High School in Yorktown, Indiana, where he played baseball.[33] He batted .488 with 13 steals as a senior in 2015.[34] After graduating, he enrolled at Indiana State University where he played college baseball and batted .305 with nine home runs, 38 RBIs, and ten doubles over 61 starts as a senior in 2019.[35] He was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the ninth round of the 2019 Major League Baseball draft.[36]

Dungan signed with the Royals and made his professional debut with the Idaho Falls Chukars with whom he was named an All-Star.[37] Over 65 games, he hit .357 with two home runs, 38 RBIs, and 19 doubles. He did not play a game in 2020 due to the cancellation of the minor league season.[38] In 2021, he played with the Northwest Arkansas Naturals and slashed .288/.357/.405 with nine home runs, 56 RBIs, and 28 stolen bases over 108 games.[39] He was assigned to the Omaha Storm Chasers for the 2022 season.[40] Over 127 games, he compiled a .208/.294/.334 slash line with nine home runs, 52 RBIs, and 17 stolen bases.[41] He returned to Omaha in 2023, hitting .273 with three home runs, thirty RBIs, and 16 stolen bases over 89 games.[42]

On December 6, 2023, the San Diego Padres selected Dungan in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft.[43]


Austin Krob

Austin Michael Krob (born September 20, 1999) is an American professional baseball pitcher in the San Diego Padres organization.

Krob attended Lisbon High School in Lisbon, Iowa and played college baseball at Texas Christian University (TCU).[44] He was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 12th round of the 2022 Major League Baseball draft.[45]

Krob signed with the Padres and spent his first professional season with the Arizona Complex League Padres and Lake Elsinore Storm.[46] In 2023, he pitched for Lake Elsinore and Fort Wayne TinCaps.


Joshua Mears

Joshua Livingstone Mears (born February 21, 2001) is an American professional baseball outfielder in the San Diego Padres organization.

Mears was born in Kirkland, Washington and attended Federal Way High School. He batted .509 with ten home runs as a senior.[47] Mears had committed to play college baseball at Purdue University prior to being drafted.[48]

Mears was selected in the second round of the 2019 Major League Baseball draft by the San Diego Padres and received a $1 million signing bonus.[49][50] After signing with the team, he was assigned to the Arizona League Padres and batted .253 with seven home runs, 24 RBIs, and thirty runs scored in 166 at-bats.[51] Mears was named to the Padres' 2021 Spring Training roster as a non-roster invitee and entered the season as the organization's 10th-ranked prospect by MLB.com.[52] He was assigned to the Low-A Lake Elsinore Storm for the 2021 season.[53] Over 71 games, he slashed .244/.368/.529 with 17 home runs, 48 RBIs, and ten stolen bases. He missed time during the season due to injury.[54]


Juan Núñez

Juan Antonio Núñez (born December 7, 2000) is a Dominican professional baseball pitcher for the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball (MLB).

On November 14, 2019, Núñez signed with the Minnesota Twins as an international free agent. He did not play in a game in 2020 due to the cancellation of the minor league season because of the COVID-19 pandemic.[55] Núñez made his professional debut in 2021 with the Dominican Summer League Twins, posting a 2-4 record and 2.14 ERA with 62 strikeouts across 11 games (10 starts).[56] He began the 2022 campaign with the rookie-level Florida Complex League Twins, logging a 4.85 ERA in 8 games (7 starts).[57]

On August 2, 2022, the Minnesota Twins traded Núñez, Cade Povich, Yennier Canó, and Juan Rojas to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for Jorge López.[58] He split the remainder of the season with the rookie-level Florida Complex League Orioles and Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds.

Núñez split the 2023 campaign between Delmarva and the High-A Aberdeen IronBirds. In 26 games (19 starts) split between the two affiliates, he compiled an 0-6 record and 3.96 ERA with 125 strikeouts and 2 saves across 104+23 innings pitched.[59] Núñez returned to Aberdeen in 2024, but struggled with injury, posting a 2.45 ERA with 38 strikeouts in 7 games (4 starts).[60]

On December 11, 2024, the San Diego Padres selected Núñez from the Orioles in the Rule 5 draft.[61]


Tirso Ornelas

Tirso Abraham Ornelas (born March 11, 2000) is a Mexican professional baseball outfielder for the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball (MLB).

Ornelas signed with the San Diego Padres as an international free agent on March 31, 2017.[62]

On July 17, 2024, the Padres added Ornelas to their 40-man roster and optioned him to the Triple–A El Paso Chihuahuas.[63] In 128 games for El Paso, he slashed .297/.367/.497 with career–highs in home runs (23) and RBI (89). Following the season, Ornelas was named San Diego's minor league player of the year.[64]
