As of 2020[update], there were 6,367 electric vehicles in South Africa.[1] As of 2022[update], 0.2% of new cars sold in South Africa were fully electric.[2]
As of May 2022[update], electric car usage in South Africa emits more greenhouse gas on average than gasoline-powered car usage due to the prevalence of coal in electricity generation.[3]
Government policy
As of 2022[update], the national government does not offer any tax incentives for electric vehicles and charges a 25% tariff on electric vehicle imports (compared with 18% for gasoline-powered cars).[4][5]
Charging stations
As of March 2023[update], there were around 300 public charging stations in South Africa.
