Smothers was rated a three star quarterback coming out of highschool. Smothers would decide to commit to play college football at the University of Nebraska over other schools such as Ole Miss, Ohio State, Baylor, Virginia, Kentucky, Northwestern, Louisville, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Troy, and UAB.[1][2]
College career
Nebraska
Smothers was announced as Nebraska's starting quarterback for their season finale versus Iowa.[3] In Smothers first start, he would complete 16 of his 22 pass attempts for 198 yards and an interceptions, while also rushing for 64 yards, and two touchdowns, but the Cornhuskers would lose to the Hawkeyes.[4][5] Smothers finished the 2021 season going 23 for 33 on passing attempts for 317 yards and an interception, while also rushing for 133 yards and two touchdowns.[6] In the 2022 season, Smothers would fo ten for eighteen on his passes for 96 yards, while also rushing for 28 yards.[7] After the conclusion of the 2022 season, Smothers would decide to enter the NCAA transfer portal.[8][9]
Jacksonville State
Smothers would decide to transfer to Jacksonville State to continue out the rest of his college career.[10][11] Smothers made his first start with Jacksonville State in week two of the 2023 season, where he completed 13 of his 17 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for 40 yards and two touchdowns, as he helped the Gamecocks beat East Tennessee State 49-3.[12]
In week five, Smothers completed 16 of his 28 passes for 197 yards and three touchdowns, while also adding a 16 yard rushing touchdown, as he led a game tying drive in regulation, and a game winning drive in overtime, to comeback to beat Sam Houston State 35-28.[13]
