Deori Kalan , is a historical city situated on the banks of the Sukhchain River, along the Narsinghpur-Sagar city road. Deori Kalan is a 150-year-old municipality in the Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh, India.

Geography

Deori is located at 21°24′N 79°01′E / 21.40°N 79.02°E / 21.40; 79.02.^[1] It has an average elevation of 360 metres (1,181 feet).

Demographics

As of the 2011 India census,^[2] Deori had a population of 25,632.^[3] Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Deori has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%. Male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 63%. In Deori, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.

History

Deori is a historical city in the Sagar District of Madhya Pradesh, India. It holds the status of a tehsil. The population of Deori is approximately 50,000.

In the 17th century, King Gond founded this city. It was originally known as Ramgarh or Ujargarh. Later, a temple was constructed at this location, and the city was renamed "Deori," meaning the "Abode of God."

It is historically known as "Panch Mahlon Ki Rajdhani." A fort from ancient times is situated in the center of the city. The city also has the oldest temple, surrounded by various historical structures.

Deori city played a unique role during the independence movement and was once visited by Mahatma Gandhi.

Places of Interest

Nauradehi: The Nauradehi Sanctuary is near Deori, covering an area of approximately 103.62 square kilometers. Sambhar, chital, blackbuck, and nilgai can be found in this sanctuary. The Gopalpura forest, known for its teak and tendu trees, is also very close to Deori. The Gopalpura is known by the name of 'Sagon' (Teak) and 'Tendu' Forest.^[4]

Deori Fort: The town and fort are believed to have been built by a Chandella Raja. It was later rebuilt by Durga Singh, the Gond ruler of Gourjhamar. Deori remained a prosperous settlement until around AD 1813, when a massive fire led to its depopulation, and it never regained its former glory.^[5]

Amritjhiriya Paramhans Aashram, It is a peaceful and natural place, some temples and ashrams are situated here.

Civic administration

Deori is represented in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly by the Deori (Vidhan Sabha constituency).^[6] As of 2023, its representative in the State Assembly is Brij Bihari pateriya of the BJP.^[7]^{[needs update]}

Temples

Deori city has many new and old historic temples.

Khanderao Temple it's a very old temple where a fair is celebrated on Champa Chhat. During the festival, people walk on fire.^[8]
Beena Barha The Jain temples of Bina Barha are an Atishay Jain tirth, located in the rural area of Garhpipariya in Deori. Acharya Vidyasagar has visited this temple many times for Chaturmas and has been a source of inspiration for the residents of Deori during religious functions organized in the city.^[9]
Chausath Yogini Mandir Chausath yogini temple is a divine temple situated in Panari village, where 64 forms of Goddess Durga are depicted, the largest banyan tree of Madhya Pradesh is also situated here. ^[10]

College

Government Nehru College was established as a non-government institution by Shri Dwarka Prasad Katare in 1964 for higher education. It became a government college on August 1, 1973. On September 1, 1975, Swami Vivekanand College was merged into it. The college is currently situated on the bypass road near the new police station. The construction of the college building was funded by the government and the University Grants Commission, and the college moved to the new building in March 1989. The college owns approximately 8 acres (32,000 m²) of land, where the college building, playground, and garden are located. In the 1996–97 session, the college gained the status of a Post Graduate College. The library is located on the first floor of the college building.
