This was the fourth season in which a playoff was held to determine the pennant, for which the first half leader would be matched against the second half winner. St. Louis won the first half while Chicago won the second half. As such, they met for a best-of-nine Championship Series. St. Louis would win the series in nine games to win their first pennant.[2]

The League broke up midway through the season due to the breakdown of the founder (and manager of Hilldale Club) although the individual teams continued to play.
A loose confederation of teams existed that were not part of either established leagues.
