The elections were held using the two-round system, with suffrage restricted to men meeting certain criteria. Voters had multiple votes, and any candidate receiving a number of votes equivalent to over 50% of the valid ballots cast was elected in the first round. If not all seats were filled, a second round was held with twice the number of candidates as seats remaining, who were the candidates who received the most votes but failed to be elected in the first round.
Results
As there were 125 valid ballots cast, candidates required 63 votes to be elected in the first round. All three incumbents were re-elected in the first round.
The newly elected States met for the first time on 12 May 1874, with Bosch Reitz appointed chairman.[2]
E.F.L. Mollinger [nl], who had been elected in 1872 resigned in April, after the elections had taken place. His seat was left unfilled until July, when he was replaced by David Baëza [nl]. N.T.A. Arlaud [nl], who had been elected in 1870, died in October 1874 and was replaced by Henry Barnett [nl]. Nominated member Verbeek resigned in January 1875, while fellow nominee Wesenhagen died in March 1875. The two were replaced by Karel Daniel Brakke [nl] and Jacobus de Jong [nl] in May. In the same month, Daniel Benjamins [nl] (elected in 1870) resigned; in June he was replaced by the returning Verbeek.
