يمكن لحمار الزرد التحرك لأي من المربعات الثمانية المعلمة بنقطة سوداء.

حمار الزرد هو أحد قطع الشطرنج الخيالية التي تتحرك مثل الحصان والجمل لكن بحركة أطول، إذ يمكنه التحرك ثلاث مربعات أفقيا ثم اثنين عموديا أو العكس ثلاث مربعات عموديا واثنين أفقيا ويمكنه تجاوز والقفز فوق القطع التي توجد في مسار حركته، وهو من القطع القافزة (2.3)

ويرمز له بالرمز J في ترميز رالف بيتزا.[1][2]

حمار الزرد كقطعة منفردة تساوي أقل من بيدقين (ما يعني أقل من الحصان) بسبب تقيد حرية حركتها في رقعة أبعادها 8x8، حركتها الطويلة هي السبب الرئيسي في كونها أكثر ضعفا من الجمل في رقعة 8x8 رغم أن الجمل مقيد اللون، وكمكون ومهاجم إلى جانب قطع أخرى فإن قيمته ترتفع إلى قيمة الحصان (فكلاهما يمكنه التحرك إلى ثمان مربعات)، غير أن حركته الطويلة تحمل خطر تنفيذ هجومات لا يمكن إيقافها في بداية اللعب والظفر بكمية في العتاد.

قال رالف بيتزا أن حركة حمار الزرد أكبر من أن تستوعبها الرقعة 8x8، وأن الرقع 10x10 فما أكثر هي الرقع المثالية التي تظهر فيها القيمة الحقيقة لحمار الزرد والتي تساوي قيمة الحصان.

نهاية اللعب بحمار الزرد

لا يمكن لحصان وحصان زرد وملك فرض مات على ملك وحيد وكذلك الحال بالنسبة لحمار زرد وجمل وملك، في حين أن حمار زرد وملك وفيل يمكنهما إماتة ملك وحيد، وفي نهاية اللعب ملك وحصان زرد مقابل ملك وقلعة فإن الفوز من نصيب القلعة (كل الإحصاءات في رقعة أبعادها 8x8) [3]
