Die teater is 'n samewerkende vorm van uitvoerende kuns wat lewendige kunstenaars, tipies akteurs of aktrises, gebruik om die ervaring van 'n werklike of verbeelde gebeurtenis voor 'n lewendige gehoor op 'n spesifieke plek aan te bied.[1] Die kunstenaars kan hierdie ervaring aan die gehoor kommunikeer deur kombinasies van gebare, spraak, sang, musiek en dans. Dit is die oudste vorm van drama, hoewel lewendige teater nou by moderne opgeneemde vorms aangesluit is. Elemente van kuns, soos geverfde agtergronde en verhoogtegnike soos beligting, word gebruik om die liggaamlikheid, teenwoordigheid en onmiddellikheid van die ervaring te verbeter.[2]
