'n Selfoon of mobiele foon is 'n draagbare elektroniese toestel wat gebruik word vir mobiele stem- of datakommunikasie oor 'n netwerk van spesiale basisstasies wat in selle opgedeel is en GSM tegnologie gebruik. Selfone kan ook addisionele dienste en toebehore ondersteun soos SMS vir die stuur van teksboodskappe, e-pos, toegang tot die Internet en MMS vir die stuur van foto's en video's.

Van die grootste selfoonvervaardigers sluit in: Nokia, Apple, BlackBerry, Alcatel, Siemens, Fujitsu, LG, Motorola, NEC, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Sanyo, Sharp, Sony (voorheen Sony Ericsson), en Toshiba.

Geskiedenis

Die idee om selfone te ontwikkel het in 1947 ontstaan. In 1968 het twee maatskappye, naamlik AT&T en Bell Labs die idee verder geneem, en die stelsels ontwikkel wat nodig sou wees vir sellulêre kommunikasie.

Later, in 1973 het Dr. Martin Cooper, die ware uitvinder van die mobiele selfoon, die eerste selfoonoproep gemaak. Cooper ('n bestuurder by Motorola), het sy opponent, Joel Engel, van Bell Labs geskakel.

Vanaf 1981 tot 1983 is die eerste twee sellulêre netwerke in die VSA opgerig (in Washington-Baltimore en in Chicago).

Suid-Afrika se eerste twee sellulêre telefoonnetwerke, MTN en Vodacom, is op 1 Junie 1994 aangeskakel. Vodacom het met die bekendmaking van die nuus beoog om dieselfde jaar 150 000 – 200 000 intekenare te kry; by die aanskakeling was daar reeds meer as 36 000.[1]
