In 'n gloeilamp word lig verwek deur 'n filamentdraad, wat uit koolstof of wolfram bestaan, met 'n elektriese stroom te verhit. Dit geskied in 'n glassfeer wat gevul is met 'n inerte of suurstofarme gas om oksidasie van die filament te verhoed.

Edison het 25 jaar later oktrooi aangevra vir dieselfde uitvinding, maar Göbel het dit beveg. In dieselfde jaar wat Göbel sy saak in die hof gewen het, het hy egter ook gesterf.

In 1910 het die Amerikaner William David Coolidge die eerste gloeidraad van wolfram vervaardig.
