Ethernet is ’n groep rekenaarnetwerktegnologieë wat algemeen gebruik word in lokale-area-netwerke (LAN), metropolitaanse-area-netwerke (MAN) en wye-area-netwerke (WAN).[1] Dit is in 1980 kommersieel bekend gestel en in 1983 die eerste keer gestandaardiseer as IEEE 802.3. Dit is sedertdien verfyn om hoër bistempo's en langer verbindingsafstande te ondersteun. Ethernet het mettertyd die mededingende koord-LAN-netwerke soos Token Ring, FDDI en ARCNET vervang.

Ethernet definieer bedrading en die seine van die fisieke vlak, asook raamformate en protokolle vir mediatoegangsbeheer (media access control, MAC). Daar is verskillende standaarde vir Ethernet, met bus- en stertopologie wat moontlik is, en spoed vanaf 10 megabis tot 100 gigabis per sekonde. Dit het in die 1990's die gewildste netwerktegnologie geword.
