Die Armeense Sosialistiese Sowjetrepubliek (Armeens: Հայկական ՍովետականՍոցիալիստական Հանրապետություն, Haikakan Sowetakan Sotsialistakan Hanrapetoetjoen; Russies: Армянская Советская Социалистическая Республика, Armjanskaja Sowjetskaja Sotsialistitsjeskaja Respoeblika), ook bekend as die Armeense SSR, was die kleinste en - met sowat 90 persent Armeniërs in 1987 - etnies mees homogene van die republieke van die Sowjetunie.[1] Dit het ontstaan toe die Kommunistiese Party van Armenië op 29 November 1920 beheer oor die land oorgeneem het. Later is die naam verander na die Armeense Sosialistiese Sowjetrepubliek.

Van 1828 tot met die Oktoberrewolusie in 1917 was Armenië deel van die destydse Russiese Ryk. Onder Sowjet-beheer is dit van ’n groot landbouland omskep in ’n belangrike nywerheidsentrum. Op 23 Augustus 1990 is dit hernoem tot die Republiek van Armenië, maar dit het deel van die Sowjetunie gebly tot met dié se verbrokkeling in 1991.

Naas sy etniese homogeniteit, wat ná die vlug van die meeste etniese Azerbeidjanners tussen 1988 en 1990 nog toegeneem het, het die Armeense SSR nog in twee belangrike opsigte van ander Sowjetrepublieke verskil. Kenmerkend was enersyds die hoë vlak van opleiding, wat ook in die Stalinistiese tydperk met sy suiwerings steeds gehandhaaf is, en die buite-proporsionele persentasie van Armeense geleerdes in die Sowjet-wetenskap, terwyl Armeniërs andersyds ook steeds noue bande met die Armeense diaspora in die buiteland gehandhaaf het sodat 'n bestendige toevloei van westerse literatuur en gedagtes van die Armeense SSR die mees kosmopolitiese en westers-gesinde Sowjetrepubliek gemaak het.[2]
