The Poor Man's Guardian

The Poor Man's Guardian adalah surat kabar mingguan murah yang diterbitkan di London, Inggris, oleh Henry Hetherington sejak Juli 1831 sampai Desember 1835.

Hetherington menerbitkan Poor Man's Guardian, pengganti harian murah Penny Papers for the People miliknya tahun 1830-31, sebagai tantangan langsung bagi pemerintah. Dengan harga satu penny untuk tiap terbitannya, koran ini memiliki slogan yang jelas: Published contrary to 'law' to try the power of 'might' against 'right'.^[1]

Koran ini adalah wujud penolakan dampak Six Acts tahun 1819 yang diberlakukan pemerintahan Partai Whig waktu itu. Undang-undang tersebut bertujuan memerangi pers bebas dan radikal yang dipandang sebagai perwujudan periode radikalisme 1816 yang terus berlanjut sampai 1820. Pemerintah mewajibkan pers berstempel (dibebankan pajak), artinya semua publikasi yang terbit dalam jeda kurang dari 26 hari harus menyertakan stempel pemerintah dan dijual seharga 7d(3p) per eksemplar. Poor Man's Guardian sangat memengaruhi keputusan pemerintahan Lord Melbourne dari Partai Whig sampai-sampai pajak harga surat kabar bisa diturunkan menjadi 4d(1,5p).

Poor Man's Guardian mengklaim bahwa stempel surat kabar adalah bentuk pajak ilmu pengetahuan. Koran ini memakai slogan Knowledge is power. Surat kabar Hetherington ini sangat sukses di pasaran dan berhasil terjual 15.000 eksemplar setiap minggunya di seluruh Britania Raya meski kantor pusatnya di London. Bronterre O'Brien, yang kelak menjadi kontributor rutin untuk Northern Star, adalah penyunting Poor Man's Guardian sejak tahun 1832.
