Taman para dewa atau Surga ilahi, konsepnya mungkin berasal dari bangsa Sumeria, atau setidaknya begitulah yang diperdebatkan oleh Samuel Noah Kramer.[3] Konsep rumah abadi ini kemudian diteruskan ke Babilonia yang menaklukkan Sumeria.[3]

Penggunaan selanjutnya

Pada periode yang jauh setelahnya, kata untuk taman surga dalam literatur Persia adalah apiri-Daeza, yang berarti "taman" atau "kandang berdinding" atau "kebun buah".[4] Kata dalam bahasa Arab untuk firdaus atau taman dalam Qur'an adalah Jannah yang secara harfiah berarti "tempat tersembunyi". Dua aliran air mengalir di bawah jannah tempat pohon-pohon besar, gunung-gunung terbuat dari musk, di antara sungai yang mengalir di lembah mutiara dan rubi.[5]
