Sylvester Mazzolini

Sylvester Mazzolini, yang dalam bahasa bahasa Italia disebut Silvestro Mazzolini da Prierio, dan dalam bahasa Latin disebut Sylvester Prierias. (1456/1457 – 1527) adalah seorang teolog yang lahir di Priero, Piedmont; ia wafat di Roma. Prierias hidup pada masa pasukan kekaisaran memaksakan jalan mereka menuju kota tersebut, yang berujung pada Jatuhnya Roma.

Pada usia lima belas tahun, ia masuk Ordo Dominikan. Dianggap brilian dalam kursus studi, ia mengajar teologi di Bologna, Pavia (atas undangan senat Venesia), dan di Roma, dimana ia dipanggil oleh Julius II pada 1511. Pada 1515, ia ditunjung menjadi Master Istana Keramat, ia memenuhi jabatan tersebut sampai akhir hayat.

Tulisan-tulisannya menyoroti tentang beragam hal, termasuk risalah-risalah tentang planet-planet, kekuasaan iblis, sejarah, homiletika, karya-karya Santo Thomas Aquinas dan keutamaan Paus. Peneladanannya terhadap ajaran Thomas adalah kritikan terhadap tafsiran-tafsiran yang ditawarkan oleh anggota Dominikan sejawatnya Thomas de Vio Cajetan.

Prierias dikenal menjadi teolog pertama yang tulisannya secara terbuka menyerang doktrin-doktrin Martin Luther.

Karya-karya utamanya adalah: De juridica et irrefragabili veritate Romanæ Ecclesiæ Romanique Pontificis (Roma, 1520); Epitoma responsionis ad Lutherum (Perugia, 1519); Errata et argumenta M. Lutheri (Roma, 1520); Summa Summarum, quæ Sylvestrina dicitur (Rome, 1516), dicetak ulang sebanyak empat puluh kali; sebuah ensiklopedia abjad dari pertanyaan-pertanyaan teologi\; Rosa aurea (Bologna, 1510) sebuah penjelasan Injil pada tahun tersebut; In theoricas planetarum (Venesia, 1513).
