Suku Kankanaey

Suku Kankanaey adalah suku asli pegunungan di Filipina Utara. Mereka merupakan bagian dari kelompok kolektif masyarakat adat yang dikenal sebagai suku Igorot.

Seperti kelompok Igorot lainnya, suku Kankanaey membangun persawahan berupa teras miring di medan terjal di Region Administratif Cordillera.

Demografi

Terdapat 362.833 jiwa Kankanaey di Filipina pada tahun 2010.[1] Suku Kankanaey tinggal di bagian barat Provinsi Pegunungan, utara Benguet dan tenggara Ilocos Selatan.[2] Mereka berbicara bahasa Kankanaey dan Ilokano.

Prasejarah

Penelitian DNA terbaru menunjukkan bahwa suku Kankanaey dan Atayal di Taiwan, kemungkinan besar adalah nenek moyang orang Lapita dan orang Polinesia modern.[3][4][5] Kankanaey mungkin mencerminkan kecocokan genetik yang lebih baik dengan pelaut Austronesia asli daripada penduduk asli Taiwan, karena genetika penduduk asli Taiwan dipengaruhi oleh migrasi yang lebih baru ke Taiwan, sedangkan suku Kankanaey dianggap tetap menjadi populasi asli yang terisolasi.[6]
