Sir Thomas Gresham

Sir Thomas Gresham (lahir: London, Inggris 1519. Meninggal: 21 November 1579) merupakan pedagang dan usahawan Inggris.[1][2] Ia mencatat hasil gemilang sebagai agen kerajaan dalam menyelesaikan hutang-hutang takhta Inggris di luar negeri (1551-1574).[1] Gresham juga membiayai pendirian Royal Exchange (1571) dan merupakan orang pertama yang mengusulkan dan legalisasi untuk memantapkan nilai tukar uang pound sterling.[1] Namanya kemudian terkenal dalam kaitan Hukum Gresham yang dicetuskannya.[1]

Sejarah singkat

Sir Thomas Gresham merupakan seorang pedagang dan pegawai kerajaan Inggris.[2] Dia adalah anak dari seorang kepala pedagang Inggris bernama Richard Gresham seorang keturunan keluarga Norfolk dan mempunyai satu saudara laki-laki dan dua saudara perempuan.[2] Pada tahun 1544, Gresham menikah dengan Anne Frenley, seorang janda dan seorang pedagang di London.[2] Gresham adalah seorang asisten Raja Henry VIII di Inggris, Ratu Elizabeth I dan Ratu Mery I.[2] Gresham menjabat sebagai penasehat keuangan Raja Henry VIII dan Ratu Elisabeth I setelah dia membantu masalah keuangan Raja Henry VIII pada tahun 1551.[2] Selain itu, Gresham juga menjabat sebagai duta besar di Istana Margaret Parmam dan menerima gelar ksatria pada tahun 1559 sebelum berhenti.[2] Selain menjabat sebagai pegawai pemerintah, dia juga tetap melaksakan usaha dagangnya.[2] Dengan itu, Gresham tercatat sebagai salah seorang terkaya di Inggris.[2]
