Estrada menjabat ketika terjadi Krisis Keuangan Asia. Namun, ekonominya dapat pulih dari peristiwa tersebut. Dari pertumbuhan menurun -0.6% pada 1998 menjadi pertumbuhan moderat 3.4% pada 1999.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
Wakil Presiden Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (putri dari Presiden Diosdado Macapagal) dilantik sebagai pengganti Estrada pada hari kepergiannya.
Senator Benigno Aquino III, putra dari mantan Presiden Corazon Aquino, memenangkan 15 juta suara atau kurang dari 50% dalam pemilihan presiden Filipina 2010. Transisi presidensial Benigno Aquino III dimulai ketika Aquino memenangkan Pemilihan presiden Filipina 2010.[7]
