Refining

Refining Pada Serat merupakan pemberian aksi mekanis terhadap serat untuk mendapatkan sifat-sifat optimum yang diharapkan pada produk kertas yang dihasilkan. Istilah refining biasa disinonimkan dengan beating walaupun hasil refining dan beating sedikit berbeda.

Alat untuk refining disebut dengan refiner dan alat untuk beating disebut beater. Beating adalah mekanisme penggilingan yang pertama sebelum ditemukannya metode refining. Hasil yang diperoleh dari proses dari proses beating cenderung menghasilkan serat yang lebih pendek dibandingkan dari hasil mekanisme refining. hal ini disebabkan karena konstruksi dari beater cenderung mengakibatkan cutting (pemotongan) serat. lain hal pada refiner, konstruksi refiner lebih menyebabkan brushing sehingga serat-serat akan terfibrilasi.
