Pada 18 Januari 2017, seorang pembom bunuh diri mengendarai kendaraan yang penuh dengan bahan peledak ke sebuah kamp militer di dekat Gao, Mali, menewaskan puluhan orang. Insiden ini merupakan serangan teroris mematikan dalam sejarah Mali.^[1]

Insiden

Sekitar pukul 09:00 pagi waktu setempat, kendaraan yang penuh dengan bahan peledak masuk ke basis Mekanisme Operasional Bersama^[2] yang menampung anggota Militer Mali dan milisi yang berafiliasi.^[3] Menurut seorang juru bicara militer, kendaraan ditandai dengan lambang unit militer daerah.^[4] Puluhan orang terbunuh, meskipun sebelumnya jumlah korban tewas yang sebenarnya belum jelas—Siaran negara ORTM mengatakan bahwa 47 orang tewas,^[4] sementara kantor Presiden memperkirakan ada 60 korban jiwa dan 115 terluka.^[2] Pada 19 Januari, juru bicara Tentara Prancis mengatakan bahwa korban tewas telah meningkat menjadi 77 orang.^[5] Al-Qaeda di Islam Maghreb mengklaim bertanggungjawab untuk serangan tersebut^[4] melalui militian grup afilasi Al-Mourabitoun,^[6] mengatakan bahwa bom "hukuman kerjasama Mali dan Prancis."^[4]

Respon

Presiden Mali Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta mengumumkan masa tiga hari berkabung nasioanl,^[3] sementara Menteri Luar Negeri Abdoulaye Diop mengatakan bahwa serangan adalah "kriminal, pengecut, dan biadab" hal ini tidak akan berakhir upaya pemerintah mencapai perdamaian dengan pejuang militan di negara itu.^[2] Menteri Pertahanan Abdoulaye Idrissa Maïga dijadwalkan untuk pergi ke Gao dalam respon pengeboman.^[4]
