Pelumampahan

Pelumampahan atau esplanad atau promenad (Bahasa Inggris : esplanade, promenade) adalah area datar yang panjang, terbuka, biasanya di sebelah sungai atau badan air yang besar, tempat orang dapat berjalan kaki. Definisi historis pelumampahan adalah area datar yang luas dan terbuka di luar benteng atau tembok kota untuk menyediakan medan api yang jelas bagi senjata benteng. Dalam penggunaan modern, wilayah dalam ruang lingkup taman pejalan kaki memungkinkan area tersebut diaspal sebagai jalur pejalan kaki ; Pelumampahan atau promenad umummnya dibangun di tepi laut dan memungkinkan siapa saja untuk berjalan jalan santai kapan saja walau pasangnya air tanpa berjalan di pantai.

Atlantic City, pelumpamahan New Jersey, seperti yang terlihat dari Caesars Atlantic City, dibuka pada tahun 1870, sebagai taman pejalan kaki pertama di Amerika. Dengan panjang 5+1⁄2 mil (9 km), ini juga merupakan trotoar terpanjang dan tersibuk di dunia. New Jersey adalah rumah bagi taman kaki dengan konsentrasi tertinggi di dunia.

Sejarah

Pada abad ke-19, penghancuran benteng kota dan relokasi fasilitas pelabuhan memungkinkan di banyak kota untuk membuat pelumampahan di bekas benteng dan markas. Bagian-bagian bekas benteng, seperti perbukitan, gardu pandang, parit, saluran air, dan danau kini telah dimasukkan ke dalam pelumampahan ini, menjadikannya tujuan wisata yang populer serta lokasi lembaga budaya. Pesatnya perkembangan penerangan jalan buatan pada abad ke-19 juga memungkinkan penggunaan yang aman di malam hari. Salah satu contohnya adalah Ringstrasse Wina.

Pelumampahan menjadi populer di zaman Victoria, ketika sanggraloka tepi laut menjadi hal yang modis. Promenad, sering disingkat menjadi prom', adalah area di mana orang-orang - terutama pasangan dan keluarga - akan berjalan-jalan sebentar untuk 'dilihat' dan dianggap sebagai bagian dari 'masyarakat'. Taman pejalan kaki pantai seperti Promenade de la Croisette di Cannes, Promenade des Anglais yang terkenal di pantai Mediterania di Nice atau Lungomare of Barcola di Trieste masih memainkan peran sentral dalam kehidupan kota dan pasar lahan yasan.

Di Amerika Serikat, esplanad memiliki arti lain, taman pejalan kaki dapat berarti sebagai gundukan atau tanggul yang membelah jalan raya, atau adimarga. Kadang-kadang taman pejalan kaki hanyalah berupa potongan rumput, atau beberapa mungkin memiliki taman dan pepohonan. Beberapa taman pejalan kaki dapat digunakan sebagai taman dengan jalur berjalan kaki/joging dan bangku.

Esplanad dan promenad terkadang digunakan secara bergantian. Derivasi dari "promenade" menunjukkan tempat yang secara khusus dimaksudkan untuk berjalan kaki, meskipun banyak promenad atau esplanad modern juga memungkinkan sepeda dan transportasi tak bermotor lainnya. Beberapa esplanad juga mencakup jalan besar atau jalan raya yang mengizinkan mobil masuk.
