Paul Wolfskehl (c. 1880)

Paul Friedrich Wolfskehl (1856-1906),lahir di Darmstadt, Jerman, adalah seorang industriawan yang memiliki ketertarikan di bidang matematika.[1] Dia terkenal karena mewasiatkan 100.000 mark (pada saat itu setara dengan 1.000.000 poundsterling) untuk orang pertama yang berhasil membuktikan kebenaran atau kesalahan dari Teorema Terakhir Fermat.

Ia merupakan anak kedua (bungsu) dari seorang bankir kaya keturunan Yahudi, Joseph Carl Theodor Wolfskehl. Ketika ayahnya meninggal, bank keluraga tersebut diwarisi oleh kakaknya Wilhelm Otto Wolfskehl. Sedangkan Paul berkarier dalam bidang kedokteran. Paul lalu terkena penyakit sklerosis, yang memaksanya berhenti dari kedokteran. Ia lalu pindah ke bidang matematika.

Wolfskehl Prize

Paul Wolfskehl mewasiatkan hadiah 100.000 mark pada penemu bukti atau bantahan terhadap teorema terakhir Fermat. Terdapat berbagai versi mengenai asal usul hadiah ini. Salah satunya menyebutkan bahwa ia patah hati karena lamarannya ditolak oleh seorang wanita dan memutuskan untuk bunuh diri. Ia memutuskan untuk menembak dirinya pada tengah malam, dan sebelum waktu tersebut ia memutuskan untuk membaca publikasi-publikasi matematika. Pada saat itu ia merasa penasaran dengan apa yang dikiranya merupakan sebuah kesalahan pada tulisan Ernst Kummer, yang menemukan kesalahan pada upaya Augustin Cauchy untuk membuktikan Teorema terakhir Fermat. Hal ini membangkitkan kembali antusiasme dan semangat hidup Wolfskehl, dan ia tidak jadi bunuh diri. Sebagai rasa terima kasihnya, ia memutuskan untuk memberikan hadiah ini. Cerita ini dituliskan oleh Philip Davis dan William Chinn dalam bukunya 3.1416 and All That, yang mendengarnya dari matematikawan terkenal Alexander Ostrowski.

Versi lainnya adalah ia mewasiatkan hadiah ini karena ingin meninggalkan istrinya warisan sekecil mungkin. Selain itu, dalam The Man Who Loved Only Numbers karangan Mark Hoffman, diceritakan bahwa Wolf terlambat dari waktu bunuh diri yang telah ditetapkannya karena terlalu lama mempelajari teorema tersebut. Ia lalu menyadari bahwa matematika lebih berharga dari seorang wanita cantik, dan memutuskan tidak jadi bunuh diri. Hadiah tersebut merupakan balas jasa karena teorema tersebut "menyelamatkan hidupnya"

Hadiah tersebut akhirnya diberikan kepada Andrew Wiles pada 1997. Namun karena inflasi yang diderita Jerman setelah Perang Dunia I, hadiah 100.000 mark yang awalnya bernilai £1.000.000 itu kini hanya bernilai £30,000, sebagaimana yang diberikan kepada Wiles.
