Monyet dan Rubah adalah salah satu Fabel Aesop dan bernomor 81 dalam Perry Index.[1]

Cerita dan persebarannya

Para hewan berkumpul untuk memilih raja dan terkagum oleh kemampuan loncat dari monyet sehingga mereka memahkotainya. Rubah menjadi salah satu kontestannya dan sekarang menjadi salah satu abdinya. Saat menghadap monyet, rubah berkata bahwa ia menemukan suatu hal untuk santapan kerajaan dan membawanya ke sebuah perangkap umpan. Terjebak di perangkap tersebut, monyet menyebut rubah telah berkhianat. Rubah menjawab bahwa seseorang yang serakah dan mudah tertipu tak layak untuk memerintah. Moral ceritanya adalah orang yang memerintah mula-mula harus mengatur diri mereka sendiri.

Fabel tersebut sangatlah tua dan telah ada sebelum Aesop karena fabel tersebut telah dipakai oleh penyair abad ke-4 SM Arkilokos.[2] Di Eropa, fabel tersebut selama jangka panjang terbatas pada sumber-sumber Yunani namun fabel tersebut adalah salah satu fabel yang juga tersebar sampai Asia Tengah dari sekitar abad ke-8 M. Fragmen-fragmen papirus berisi fabel tersebut dari era tersebut ditemukan dalam bahasa Sogdia dan Uighur.[3] Fabel-fabel Aesop dikenal di Jepang pada awal 1594, muncul dalam salah satu buku pertama yangd icetak dengan tipe Roman dan masih meraih popularistas sejak saat itu.[4]

Fabel monyet dan rubah muncul di negara-negara Eropa lainnya pada abad ke-17. Hieronymus Osius membuat sebuah syair Neo-Latin tentang fabel tersebut[5] dan fabel tersebut masuk dalam kumpulan cerita Roger L'Estrange[6] dan Samuel Croxall.[7]
