Situs Warisan Dunia UNESCO Monumen Bersejarah Kyoto Kuno (Kota Kyoto, Uji, dan Otsu) meliputi 17 tempat di Jepang, dalam kota Kyoto dan sekitarnya. Tempat-tempat tersebut terdapat di tiga kota: Kyoto dan Uji di Prefektur Kyoto; dan Ōtsu di Prefektur Shiga; Uji dan Ōtsu masing-masing berbatasan dengan Kyoto di selatan dan utara. Dari monumen-monumen tersebut, tiga belas darinya merupakan kuil Buddhis; tiga merupakan kuil Shinto; dan satu merupakan kastel. Properti tersebut mencakup 38 bangunan yang ditetapkan oleh pemerintah Jepang sebagai Pusaka Nasional, 160 properti ditetapkan sebagai Properti Budaya Penting, delapan taman ditetapkan sebagai Tempat Khusus Berpemandangan Indah, dan empat darinya ditetapkan sebagai Tempat Berpemandangan Indah. UNESCO memasukkan situs ini dalam daftar Warisan Dunia pada 1994.
Kyoto merupakan ibu kota Jepang dari tahun 794 hingga akhir abad ke-19. Beberapa struktur bersejarah kota ini menunjukkan seperti apa kehidupan di ibu kota pada abad-abad itu.[1] Kyoto memiliki sejumlah besar bangunan bersejarah, tidak seperti kota-kota Jepang lainnya yang kehilangan bangunan-bangunannya akibat invasi dan perang asing; dan memiliki konsentrasi terbesar dari Properti Budaya yang ditetapkan di Jepang. Meskipun diporak-porandakan oleh perang, kebakaran, dan gempa bumi selama sebelas abad sebagai ibu kota kekaisaran, Kyoto terhindar dari sebagian besar kehancuran dan bahaya Perang Dunia II. Kota ini selamat dari pengeboman api terhadap kota-kota besar yang hampir menyeluruh di Jepang dalam bagian untuk mempertahankannya sebagai target bom atom utama. Ia kemudian dihapus dari daftar target bom atom, melalui intervensi secara pribadi Menteri Perang Henry L. Stimson, karena Stimson ingin menyelamatkan pusat kebudayaan ini yang dia kenal dari bulan madunya dan kunjungan diplomatiknya kemudian. Sebagai akibatnya, Nagasaki kemudian ditambahkan sebagai kota target bom atom.[2][3]
Tujuh belas properti Situs Warisan Dunia tersebut berasal dari periode antara abad ke-10 dan ke-19, dan masing-masing mewakili periode di mana ia dibangun. Pentingnya daerah Kyoto secara sejarah diperhitungkan oleh UNESCO dalam proses pemilihan.[4]
