Maskara

Maskara adalah kosmetik yang umumnya digunakan untuk memperindah mata. Fungsinya antara lain untuk mempergelap, mempertebal, memperpanjang, dan/atau memperjelas bulu mata. Normalnya, maskara modern berbentuk cair, padat, atau krim, yang terbuat dari beragam bahan, meskipun sebagian besarnya terbuat dari bahan yang sama seperti pigmen, minyak, lilin, dan bahan pengawet.

Definisi

Collins English Dictionary mendefinisikan maskara sebagai "zat kosmetik untuk mempergelap, memperpanjang, mengeritingkan, mewarnai, dan mempertebal bulu mata, yang dipakai dengan sebuah sikat atau kuas". Oxford English Dictionary (OED) menambahkan bahwa maskara kadang-kadang juga digunakan pada alis mata.

Kata "maskara" diduga berasal dari bahasa Spanyol máscara yang berarti ‘topeng’ atau ‘noda’ dan dari bahasa Italia maschera yang berarti 'topeng' atau ‘masker’.^[1]

Sejarah

Penggunaan maskara telah terdokumentasikan sejak zaman Mesir kuno. Catatan dari tahun 4000 SM menyebutkan penggunaan zat bernama kohl yang berfungsi untuk mempergelap bulu mata, mata, dan alis.^[2] Penggunaan maskara mulai populer dan meluas di kalangan wanita Eropa pada abad ke-19 di era Victoria.^[3] Maskara yang banyak digunakan sekarang ini pada awalnya dikembangkan pada abad ke-19 oleh seorang kimiawan Inggris bernama Eugene Rimmel.^[4] Di Amerika Serikat, maskara mulai populer pada awal abad ke-20 karena banyak dipakai oleh artis-artis film bisu.^[5]
