Kuñjarakarna

Naskah nipah Kuñjarakarna yang disimpan di Universitas Leiden sebagai naskah Orientalis 2266, halaman 1 verso.

Kuñjarakarna adalah sebuah teks prosa Jawa Kuno yang menceritakan seorang yaksa, semacam raksasa yang bernama Kunjarakarna. Cerita ini berdasarkan agama Buddha Mahayana.

Ringkasan

Pada suatu hari Kuñjarakarna bertapa di gunung Mahameru supaya pada kelahiran berikutnya ia bisa berreinkarnasi sebagai manusia berparas baik. Maka datanglah ia menghadap Wairocana.

Maka ia diperbolehkan menjenguk neraka, tempat batara Yama. Di sana ia mendapat kabar bahwa temannya Purnawijaya akan meninggal dalam waktu beberapa hari lagi dan disiksa di neraka.

Kunjarakarna menghadap Wairocana untuk meminta dispensasi. Akhirnya ia diperbolehkan memberi tahu Purnawijaya. Purnawijaya terkejut ketika diajak melihat neraka. Lalu ia kembali ke bumi dan berpamitan dengan istrinya.

Akhirnya ia mati tetapi hanya disiksa selama 10 hari dan bukannya ratusan tahun. Lalu ia diperbolehkan kembali. Cerita berakhir dengan bertapanya Kunjarakarna dan Purnawijaya di lereng gunung Mahameru.

Amanat cerita: barangsiapa mendengarkan dan tahu akan hukum dharma, maka ia akan diselamatkan.
