Istri (bahasa Sanskerta: strī yang artinya adalah "wanita" atau "perempuan") atau bini[1] adalah wanita yang telah dinikahi dan bersuami dengan status menikah.[2] Salah seorang pelaku pernikahan yang berjenis kelamin wanita yang dinikahi oleh seorang pria atau suami, seorang wanita biasanya menikah dengan seorang pria dalam suatu upacara pernikahan yang diakui secara sah secara agama dan hukum negara sebelum diresmikan statusnya sebagai seorang istri dan pasangannya sebagai seorang suami, dalam berbagai agama seorang wanita hanya boleh menikah dengan satu pria, di dalam agama tertentu, pernikahan seorang pria dengan banyak wanita diperbolehkan atas persetujuan istri dan Pengadilan Agama, hal ini dinamakan poligami, sedangkan pernikahan seorang wanita dengan banyak pria disebut poliandri, di Indonesia poliandri dilarang bahkan terlarang, dan di dalam berbagai agama diharam kan serta menurut hukum Islam dan hukum negara[3]
