Knol adalah proyek berupa situs web yang direncanakan Google untuk berisi artikel-artikel yang dibuat oleh pengguna dengan ruang lingkup dari "konsep ilmu pengetahuan hingga informasi medis, dari geografi dan sejarah sampai hiburan, dari informasi produk, sampai instruksi cara membetulkannya."[1] Knol diumumkan pada tanggal 13 Desember 2007 dan akhirnya dibuka bagi publik pada tanggal 23 Juli 2008[2] dengan beberapa ratus artikel yang lebih berkaitan dengan dunia medis dan kesehatan. Situs ini dianggap sebagai usaha Google untuk menyaingi Wikipedia.[3]

Situs ini kini sedang dalam beta dan bersifat pribadi,[1] dan permintaan untuk membuat "knol" hanya oleh undangan. Knol merupakan istilah yang menurut Google berarti "satu unit ilmu pengetahuan". Meski situs webnya berbahasa Inggris, tetapi ada beberapa artikel yang tidak berbahasa Inggris, seperti bahasa Indonesia, dan lain-lain.

Penutupan

Pada November 2011 Google mengumumkan bahwa Knol akan dihapus. Konten telah dipindahkan oleh pemilik ke laman berbasis WordPress, Annotum. Knol telah ditutup pada 30 April 2012, dan semua konten telah dihapus pada 1 Oktober 2012. Antara tanggal tersebut konten tidak dapat dilihat, tetapi bisa diunduh dan diekspor.[4]
