Kecelakaan kereta api Eséka 2016

Pada tanggal 21 oktober 2016, kereta api antar kota milik Camrail yang berangkat dari Yaoundé, ibu kota Kamerun, menuju Douala anjlok di Eséka, Region Tengah. Paling sedikit 79 orang tewas dan 551 orang luka-luka.[1][2][3][4]

Ini adalah kecelakaan kereta api paling mematikan di benua Afrika sejak kecelakaan kereta api Benaleka pada bulan Agustus 2007.

Latar belakang

Camrail, anak perusahaan dari grup Bolloré, juga mengoperasikan Sitarail, sebuah perusahaan yang menyediakan jasa kereta api di Burkina Faso dan Pantai Gading. Sitarail mengalami kecelakaan besar di bulan September 2016, ketika sebuah jembatan runtuh saat salah satu kereta api Sitarail melewatinya.[5][6] Kecelakaan tersebut yang disebabkan oleh penutupan jaringan rel antara negara-negara Afrika Barat.

Kecelakaan

Kereta api yang mengalami kecelakaan itu berjalan pada sebuah jalur Camrail antara ibu kota, Yaoundé, dan kota terbesar, Douala. Karena hujan deras belakangan ini, sebuah peristiwa tanah longsor telah menghancurkan sebuah jembatan di jalan utama yang menghubungkan kedua kota, menyebabkan orang-orang terpaksa untuk bepergian menggunakan kereta api. Akibatnya, Camrail memperpanjang rangkaian kereta dengan gerbong tambahan. Jumlah penumpang dilaporkan menjadi sekitar 1.300, dua kali lipat dari kapasitas yang seharusnya hanya 600 penumpang. Kereta api meninggalkan Yaoundé pukul 11:00 waktu setempat dengan sedikit terlambat.[4] Seorang wartawan Reuters yang menumpangi kereta mengabarkan adanya sebuah suara keras dan asap saat beberapa gerbong yang anjlok sekitar pukul 12:00 waktu setempat (18:00 WIB) di Eséka, sekitar 120 km di sebelah barat ibu kota.[2]

Korban diangkut ke rumah sakit setempat di Eséka dan di Douala. Gambar di media sosial menunjukkan beberapa gerbong terguling ke lereng di samping rel, ketika ratusan penumpang menonton.[2] Karena kecelakaan ini, serta peristiwa runtuhnya jembatan sebelumnya, poros transportasi utama Kamerun terputus untuk saat ini.[2]

Penyelidikan

Pada 25 Oktober, pengadilan Kamerun mengumumkan bahwa mereka akan memulai sebuah penyelidikan untuk mencari siapa yang bersalah atas kecelakaan itu.[7] Besoknya, direktur utama Bolloré Afrika mengumumkan bahwa kereta api melaju di atas batas kecepatan ketika jatuh.[8]
