Keajaiban Massachusetts


Keajaiban Massachusetts adalah suatu periode ketika Massachusetts mengalami pertumbuhan ekonomi yang tinggi pada tahun 1980-an. Sebelumnya, negara bagian ini terguncang akibat deindustrialisasi dan pengangguran. Pada masa ini, tingkat pengangguran menurun dari lebih dari 12% pada tahun 1975 menjadi kurang dari 3%, yang juga disertai dengan penurunan pajak dan peningkatan pendapatan secara drastis.[1]

Pertumbuhan ekonomi Massachusetts pada masa ini ditopang oleh industri berteknologi tinggi dan jasa keuangan di Boston dan di wilayah suburbannya di sepanjang Rute 128. Nama rute ini pun diasosiasikan dengan industri teknologi tinggi seperti Silicon Valley.[2] Beberapa perusahaan penting pada masa ini adalah Digital Equipment Corporation, Data General, Wang Laboratories, Prime Computer, Lotus Development Corporation, dan Apollo Computer.[3]

Pada awal tahun 1990-an, Massachusetts dan wilayah timur laut lainnya jauh lebih terkena dampak resesi awal tahun 1990-an daripada negara-negara bagian lainnya. Tingkat pengangguran mencapai 9% pada musim panas tahun 1992. Namun, Massachusetts berhasil bangkit lebih cepat daripada wilayah timur lautnya yang juga dibantu oleh perkembangan pesat teknologi di Amerika Serikat pada tahun 1990-an, dan pada akhir dasawarsa tingkat pengangguran sudah turun di bawah 3%.

Michael Dukakis menjabat sebagai Gubernur Massachusetts pasa masa ini dan mencoba menggunakan "Keajaiban" ini untuk mengkampanyekan dirinya selama pemilihan umum Presiden Amerika Serikat 1988.[4]
