Iodoform

Iodoform merupakan suatu padatan atau serbuk berwarna kuning.^[1]^[2] Iodoform ini dihasilkan dari pemanasan etanol atau aseton dengan bantuan natrium hidroksida dan iodin atau natrium karbonat dengan iodin dalam air.^[1] Iodoform mungkin merupakan bahan farmasi yang paling tua. Bentuknya berupa kristal kuning dengan karakteristik anastetik odor.^[2] Biasanya digunakan dalam bentuk serbuk, terutama untuk antiinfeksi lokal untuk menggumpalan dan mengurangi kecenderungan infeksi dan luka.^[2] Namun, karena ia memiliki efek toksik dengan efek tidak bisa tidur, halusinasi, dan kejang, maka ia diganti dengan zat lain terutama yang mengandung iodofor.^[2] Aplikasi khusus yang masih digunakan yaitu dengan mengisi rongga mulut dalam kedokteran gigi dan dalam operasi.^[2]

Iodoform (salah satu zat berkhasiat terkenal) merupakan antiseptik yang sangat efektif untuk kulit, maka sebagai tinktur iod banyak digunakan sebelum injeksi.^[3] Efek sampingnya warna cokelatnya dan kadang terjadi dermatitis (alergi kulit) hampir semua kuman patogen termasuk fungi dan virus dimatikan oleh iodium.^[3] Begitu pula spora, walaupun diperlukan waktu lebih lama.^[3]
