Huaxia adalah sebuah konsep sejarah yang mewakili bangsa dan peradaban Tiongkok. Konsep ini muncul dari kesadaran suku Han akan suku nenek moyang mereka yang dikenal dengan sebutan "Huaxia".

Menurut Zuo Zhuan, istilah xia (夏)—yang berarti "agung"—digunakan untuk menandai etiket upacara di Tiongkok, sementara hua (華)—yang bermakna "termasyhur"—digunakan untuk baju indah yang dikenakan oleh orang Tionghoa (中國有禮儀之大，故稱夏；有服章之美，謂之華).[1]

Istilah "Huaxia" mengacu kepada konfederasi suku-suku yang melakukan pertanian pada zaman Neolitikum akhir dan Zaman Perunggu awal yang tinggal di sepanjang Sungai Kuning dan Guanzhong. Mereka dianggap sebagai nenek moyang suku Han modern.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8] Pada Periode Negara Perang (475–221 SM), kesadaran akan identitas Huaxia terus berkembang dan mengakar di Tiongkok.[8][9] Pada awalnya, Huaxia hanya didefinisikan sebagai masyarakat beradab yang berbeda dari "suku-suku barbar" di sekitar mereka.[10][3]
