Hendrik Willem Mesdag (23 Februari 1831 – 10 Juli 1915) adalah seorang pelukis laut asal Belanda.

Ia lahir di Groningen, putra dari bankir Klaas Mesdag dan istrinya Johanna Wilhelmina van Giffen. Mesdag didorong oleh ayahnya, seorang pelukis amatir, untuk belajar seni. Dia menikah dengan Sina van Houten pada tahun 1856, dan ketika mereka mewarisi kekayaan dari ayahnya, Mesdag pensiun dari perbankan pada usia 35 untuk mengejar karir sebagai pelukis.

Ia belajar di Brussels dengan Willem Roelofs dan pada tahun 1868 pindah ke Den Haag untuk melukis laut. Pada tahun 1870 ia berpameran di Paris Salon dan memenangkan medali emas untuk The Breakers of the North Sea.

Pada tahun 1880 ia menerima komisi dari perusahaan Belgia untuk melukis panorama yang memberikan pemandangan desa Scheveningen di pantai Laut Utara dekat Den Haag. Dengan bantuan Sina dan murid-muridnya ia menyelesaikan lukisan yang sangat besar, Panorama Mesdag,— Tinggi 14 m dan sekitar 120 m — pada tahun 1881. Namun, mode untuk panorama akan segera berakhir, dan ketika perusahaan yang mengoperasikannya bangkrut pada tahun 1886, Mesdag membeli lukisan itu di lelang dan setelah itu mendanai kerugian operasinya dari kantongnya sendiri.

Ia bergabung dengan masyarakat seni Den Haag ("Studio Pulchri") dan pada tahun 1889 terpilih sebagai ketua. Pada tahun 1903 ia menyerahkan rumahnya di Laan van Meerdervoort dan koleksi lukisannya kepada Belanda; rumah itu sekarang menjadi Museum Mesdag[1]
