Gardu listrik aliran atas arus bolak-balik adalah jenis gardu listrik aliran atas yang menggunakan arus bolak-balik sebagai sumber energi listrik. Jenis gardu ini umumnya digunakan pada tegangan tinggi. Pemakaian gardu listrik aliran atas arus bolak-balik bertujuan untuk mengurangi jumlah gardu listrik aliran atas sepanjang jalur kereta api. Jarak pemasangan masing-masing gardu listrik aliran atas arus bolak-balik mencapai 60 kilometer. Daya listrik yang digunakan oleh lokomotif dapat memakai arus searah maupun arus bolak-balik. Karenanya pada lokomotif dengan motor arus searah, arus bolak-balik dari gardu listrik aliran atas arus bolak-balik diubah menjadi arus searah. Sedangkan pada lokomotif dengan motor arus bolak-balik, arus bolak-balik tidak perlu diubah menjadi arus searah. Gardu listrik aliran atas arus bolak-balik pertama kali digunakan oleh negara Jerman bersamaan dengan pemakaian listrik aliran atas untuk pertama kalinya pula. Jenis motor yang digunakan adalah motor universal dengan tegangan listrik sebesar 15 kV dan frekuensi sebesar 16 2/3 Hz. Pada perkembangannya, gardu listrik aliran atas arus bolak-balik yang ada di dunia menggunakan tiga jenis tegangan menengah atau tegangan tinggi dan frekuensi yang berbeda, yaitu 25 kV 50/60 Hz, 50 kV 50/60 Hz, dan 15 kV 16 2/3 Hz. Gardu listrik aliran atas arus bolak-balik tersusun dari rel daya, peralatan hubung bagi, transformator, alat ukur listrik dan peralatan proteksi.[1]
