Etimologi rakyat

Etimologi rakyat atau etimologi populer adalah perubahan analogis dalam bentuk kata atau frasa yang terjadi sebagai akibat penggantian bentuk kebahasaan yang kurang dikenal dengan unsur yang dianggap lebih lazim.[1][2][3] Inovasi jenis ini mengambilalihkan suatu formasi asing dengan memberinya bentuk yang lebih jelas bagi bahasawan, tanpa memperhatikan sifat semantisnya; misalnya nama Carpentier dijadikan "sekar pace".[1]

Dalam pengertian lain, istilah "etimologi rakyat" (atau "keratabasa"[4]) juga merujuk kepada sikap menjelaskan asal usul perkataan berdasarkan kemiripan formal yang ditemukan dalam bahasa, tanpa menggunakan metode ilmiah yang diterapkan oleh ilmu linguistik.[5]

Istilah "etimologi rakyat" merujuk kepada kata Volksetymologie dalam bahasa Jerman yang dimunculkan oleh Ernst Förstemann pada tahun 1852.[6]
