Eggnog

Eggnog atau egg nog (bahasa Prancis: lait de poule) adalah minuman manis dari kuning telur yang dikocok ditambah air dan gula atau susu. Sebagai perisa adalah bubuk vanili, pala, atau kayu manis. Minuman ini bisa menjadi minuman beralkohol dengan tambahan rum, brendi, atau wiski.

Orang Jerman membuat eggnog dari bir yang dididihkan, dan menyebutnya biersuppe (sup bir). Sebelum dicampurkan ke dalam bir, kuning telur dikocok dengan susu. Selain ditambah gula, ke dalam minuman ini ditambahkan parutan kulit sitrun dan bubuk kayu manis.[1]

Pada kebudayaan Barat, Egg nog dikenal sebagai minuman perayaan musim dingin seperti perayaan Natal dan tahun baru. Minuman ini dipakai sewaktu bersulang di pesta perayaan akhir tahun.

Sejarah

Catatan tertulis yang tertua tentang egg nog berasal dari awal abad ke-17. Ketika itu, eggnog diminum ketika bersulang untuk kesehatan peminumnya. Minuman ini diperkirakan dibawa ke Amerika Utara oleh imigran dari Eropa. Sejak dulu, di Dunia Lama sudah dikenal berbagai punch dari susu dan anggur. Di Amerika Serikat, rum adalah minuman yang populer. Sebutan lain untuk rum adalah grog, sehingga kemungkinan nama minuman ini berasal dari egg (telur) dan grog (rum).[2]

Arti harfiah eggnog adalah telur di dalam mangkuk kecil. Kata nog berasal dari dialek Inggris kuno (dari East Anglia) yang berarti sejenis bir beralkohol tinggi. Catatan tertua tentang keberadaan bir jenis ini berasal dari abad ke-17. Pada awal abad ke-19, eggnog sudah populer di Eropa dan Amerika.[3]
