Ali Ismail Abbas


Ali Ismail Abbas (lahir 1991) adalah seorang remaja berkebangsaan Irak yang banyak diliput media setelah mengalami luka parah dalam serangan misil Amerika Serikat di Baghdad pada tahun 2003.

Luka-luka

Pada saat penyerangan terjadi, dua misil Amerika Serikat menerjang rumahnya dan membunuh kedua orang tuanya (termasuk adiknya yang masih dalam kandungan), saudara laki-lakinya, dan 13 anggota keluarga lain. Ali mengalami luka bakar tingkat tiga yang menutup 35% tubuhnya, kedua tangan Ali pun harus diamputasi. Ketika itu, Ali berusia 12 tahun. Ali kemudian mengalami perawatan di Kuwait, dan kemudian dipindahkan ke London, di mana ia diberikan tangan palsu robotik yang dibiayai oleh pemerintah Kuwait. Ia memilih untuk tidak menggunakan tangan tersebut karena terlalu berat dan tidak nyaman digunakan, namun tetap menggunakan tangan palsu di sekolah agar tidak terlalu menarik perhatian. Saat ini ia menjalani pendidikan di Hall School Wimbledon.[1]

Kewarganegaraan

Pada 1 Januari 2010, Ali Abbas resmi diberikan passpor Britania Raya.[2] Ali juga mendapatkan tawaran dari negara lain, seperti Kanada dan Amerika Serikat, namun ia menolaknya karena negara tersebut tidak mengizinkan Ali membawa teman-temannya ikut serta ke sana.[3]

Publisitas

Pada tahun 2004, sebuah buku berjudul The Ali Abbas Story ditulis oleh Jane Warren dan dipublikasikan oleh Harper Collins. Ali juga tampil dalam acara 60 Minutes pada 13 May 2007.[4]
